A major historic election.

I think it will be some time before we understand the true significance of this election.

An extreme right-wing had taken over the Republican Party and with the help of a Supreme Court decision (Citizens United), were ready to take over our government. They already had control of the House and believed that they were going to get a majority in the Senate. With all the money in the world, they believed they had the Presidency all wrapped up. In fact, they received more than 57 million votes in this pursuit.

If they had been successful, they would have repealed the ACA (Obamacare) and would have put 50 million people on the street with no insurance. They would have made the Bush tax cuts permanent and would have run up our debt to unconscionable levels. In the process, they would have cut deeply the programs that people are dependent upon. They would have increased the military spending and probably would have prepared us for another war. Needless to say, many people would have suffered under such a regime.

This President was able to put together an historic coalition that defeated this dangerous right-wing cabal. Women, young people, minorities, and a white liberal base carried the President and the Democratic Party to victory. Whether or not this coalition is temporary or can be put together again is open to question. However, this President saved our country from a real right-wing fascist threat, I am convinced. We were so close to a national disaster, if not for this President.

I think this is where history will record the greatness of Barack Obama.

the bulk of Americans are aware that we cannot revert to the capitalistic/near-fascistic policies that were once prevalent in Western socities.

Giving us the illusion that there were more of them. But now we know it's only a few banshees making an inhuman howl of a noise.
