9. The Republicans have used the wedge issues because they know the minions will fall for them.

Abortion, gay marriage, taxes, guns--Republicans know the words to throw out there that people get emotional about. It's much easier to distract the citizens from stopping the dirty work when they're paying attention to other "issues."
