I think the South is shifting--but not in a way where Republican/Tea Party/Dixiecrat rule will come to an end.

Some parts of the South seem to be turning progressive. Virginia has become a swing state, thanks to urbanization near Washington, DC. I am still pleased with North Carolina's purple tinge. I suspect that if the recovery had gotten better, President Obama would have carried North Carolina, too.

The majority of Florida's voters may be turning progressive. Unfortunately, the majority of the Florida legislature's districts seem to be deep-dyed red.

Unfortunately, the Dixiecrat/Tea Party pestilence has spread to states outside the old Confederacy. I'd say that both Oklahoma and Kansas seem to have gone permanently red-state. Prairie-state progressivism in Kansas seems to have died, died, died. There are still progressives here and there in Kansas, but not enough to throw out the reactionary Koch-backed Republicans who have their state by the throat.

Don't get me started about my native Texas. The 2010 election helped the Republicans to cement their hold on the Texas legislature for at least a decade. Despite the shifting demographics here in the Lone Star State, Latino participation in the electoral process has a long, long way to go. Nor does it help that the news media here has by and large chosen to ignore Democrats.

it was single digits. The south is changing slowly. Some southern states will be blue in 2016 if democrats select a strong campaigner that won't concede any state.

We are Atlanta residents, when we live in the US, and I just cannot wait until the day comes when Georgia, North Carolina, and even Texas are reliably, or "leaning" blue states...Wouldn't it be nice if, every Presidential election cycle, the Democrats started out with like 306 EVs projected, and the Republicans had to flip like 5 states every time, as well as holding on for dear life to the states that they have? Lord, please let that day come to pass soon.....
