Shame on the Media for Turning Biden's Old Classified Docs into a Snipe Hunt
False equivalence and what-aboutismhas no one learned anything from the last decade?
By Charles P. Pierce
We're all going to have to come to grips with the fact that CNN is going to go all-in on this obvious snipe hunt over the classified documents that lawyers for the president gave back to the National Archives as soon as they found them. According to NBC, there was a second batch of documents. Two! two! two snipes in one!
This so energized the various gun-bearers and bloodhounds at CNN that one of them, Stephen Collison, went storming off into the bogs on his own. This shebeen doesn't often call out individual reporters by name; the job is hard enough without an ever-expanding peanut gallery. And Collison's egregious effort Thursday morning was only the latest indication that CNN, under its new management, thinks the what-aboutism of the Biden documents is going to be its train to glory. But this lede right here? This is everything that's been wrong about elite political journalism ever since everyone went down to Arkansas in the early 1990s to troll for fish stories.
Do you see how this works? The only way that the current situation spirals "into a major political crisis" and/or offers "a huge opening to the new pro-Trump House majority" is if the elite political media plays along. The GOP is "already moving to unleash an investigative machine" to prove that Dr. Anthony Fauci conspired with Chinese Communists to create COVID-19. This is no more a valid use of the Congress' investigative power than what's coming on the Biden documents. The only validation the two investigations can receive is if they are treated as serious news stories and not as the transparent ratfcking they obviously are. Moreover, almost every news operation that has joined in the snipe hunt also makes a point to remind us that the Biden situation has absolutely nothing in common with the Pool Shed Papers.

(29,313 posts)it is already a "major political scandal" (even if not really a scandal).
The media has made it so.
bothsidererism is running amok already.
If TFG is charged now (as he should be) with theft of classified material, he will skate with a polluted jury pool.
It's really sad because this was such a slam dunk criminal case against Trump... plenty of evidence of intent and concealment of the crime, etc.

(7,927 posts)...than lay people pre-criticizing them (like you are doing) give them credit for.
Rest assured that the very capable government attorneys that will bring forth a potential case against Trump will certainly make them aware of the differences and will easily be able to knock down any deflection from Trump's attorneys.

same reason gop had a chance at winning there house back after the treason and criminality of TFG they enabled and protected- a few months of unchallenged screaming to 50 mil/week is all it took to make that coup attempt look insignificant relative to the price of eggs

(5,104 posts)CNN has not been spinning "false equivalences," but rather has been covering the story responsibly and have been very careful to make the "apples and oranges" distinctions between the Biden team's handling on these discovered documents and the actions of Donald J Trump.
The misinformation campaigns and conspiracy mentality hurt our party.
Stop spreading mendacity. One koo-koo party is more than enough.

(7,927 posts)We've seen the clips and videos and articles. As have you, since you've been in each of the threads trying to dismiss them away.
It's about time you realize that no matter how strongly you defend this weird obsession with CNN, people are going to believe their own eyes and ears.

(10,395 posts)Did he really use CNN and "not been spinning "false equivalences," but covering the story responsibly" in the same sentence???
CNN - not as obviously Republicon propaganda as Fox but they carry all the same stories with the same slant.

They use to be better but in the last year they have gone down the Fox hole.

(161,010 posts)Almost immediately "journalists" became desperate to prove by gawd it is not, by going after Democrats with a vengeance.
Who would have imagined the "news" people would have found it worthwhile to pass on to the world that Obama dared to wear a beige suit one summer, without ever also gibbering about the fact the Senate has an annual "Seersucker Day?"
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - National Seersucker Day is June 13, and Senator Bill Cassidy is inviting citizens to wear their best seersucker attire Thursday.
It is a bipartisan tradition, celebrating an American tradition that started in New Orleans, said Dr. Cassidy. Wearing a seersucker suit makes a summer stroll outside enjoyable no matter how warm.

Their seersuckers say a lot!
Compare their record reporting Gary Hart and Bill Clinton and John Edwards to the enormous list of grimy, low-down, even shocking behaviors by so many, many Republicans....
The corporate media's handling of those three men treated them as if they were this country's most notorious criminals since the Earth was formed, yet hardly even paused to scribble a few words over the primitive, sometimes brutal behavior of Republican politicians toward their prey.
Too much idle time on all their hands.

Great photos btw. I noticed that Lindsey Graham studiously avoids participating in National Seersucker Day.
But then - that joke would practically write itself, wouldn't it!
