So, the Freepers are talking secession again

Thread here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2956232/posts

I think it is a basic human right to live under a government that governs with the consent of the governed. I think this basic human right transcends whatever the law may say (Scalia says there is no Constitutional right to secede). The Civil War experience we had in this country has forever colored our concept of secession. We automatically think of it as a violent, tragic enterprise. But this is a narrow viewpoint. There was a Civil War because one side wanted to secede and the other side wanted to remain intact.

But in a situation where both (or more) sides are willing to secede, you can have a peaceful split. Czechoslovakia becoming the Czech Republic and Slovakia, for example.

The historical trend has been for small countries to merge into big countries, but there is no a priori reason to assume that this is always inevitable or always desirable.

2014 won't save us. 2016 won't save us. Getting a new person in the White House isn't the answer, that only buys time, it doesn't fix the problem.

It's time for people, not just right-wingers but it should start with them, to start floating the idea of a peaceful break-up of the United States of America. Getting bogged down into how it will work or whatever isn't the first step, the first step is to overcome the taboo of talking about it. Right now, even among many right-wingers, it is tinfoil hat talk to mention the s-word. That needs to change. This would be a much happier continent in a post-secession America.

And the people who are always whining about immigration won't be here to see all the NEW LEGALS moving into their neighborhoods, so they won't be bothered by it.

If they wind up in Mexican prisons for their outrageous behavior or on the wrong side of a drug cartel they will either be executed or find a way to get the prisons to follow the 5 star system and Mexico has some history of pleasing their type so it could go either way.

Happy New Legals in America working and sending money home to help their families and still clueless seccessionists still thinking they own their little part of the world.

You're right. Mexico wouldn't go for it.

ALTHOUGH.... you must admit that there has been a lot of gang style warfare and basically assassinations of elected officials going on in Mexico over the last many years. So depending on the money you have and your connections, the "rule of law" MIGHT be open to some flexibility.

MEXICO CITY, Sept. 11, 2011 - During the administration of President Felipe Calderon, 174 public officials and politicians have been murdered by organized crime.

According to a count made by this newspaper, the victims range from candidates, mayors, elected mayors, state and local legislators, retired generals who act as secretaries of local public safety, state secretaries of public security and police chiefs, among others.

The largest proportion of those homicides refers to police officers, with 83 cases.

MEXICO CITY — It must have seemed like a good idea at the time: a memorial to the thousands of victims of the drug violence that has convulsed Mexico for most of the last decade.

Washington, after all, has its Vietnam War memorial. New York has its monument at the site of the World Trade Center.

But even as the winning design was being announced, Mexico's tribute was stricken by the conflicting visions and bitter disputes that have driven wedges into Mexican society.

Innocent civilians, police officers on duty and soldiers fighting drug cartels are among the more than 50,000 dead in the government's crackdown on the cartels. But there are also huge numbers of bad guys: traffickers, their thuggish gunmen, their corrupt politician accomplices. Does the memorial speak for all of them? And if not, how do you winnow the memorialized?

Don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

Too bad whatever states you take won't get to keep any military bases, NASA, national parks or other real estate belonging to the US government. You won't get any more federal money. No Social Security, Medicare, highway funds, education grants, weather services (find your own damn hurricanes), airport construction grants, or FAA air traffic controllers. You don't get to keep the Centers for Disease Control if you take Georgia; do your own disease research. You won't have an army, a navy or an air force, either. That's all ours, including the ships and airplanes.

So, welcome to the Third World, Freepers. Give it a couple of years and you'll be begging for foreign aid from us because you'll have started to look like Bangladesh.

Wed Nov 7, 2012, 03:54 PM
Nov 2012

I didn't write this but it sounds good to me!

(with apologies to enlightened Red-Staters, no offense intended by me)

"The Enlightened States of America”

Dear Red States:
We’re ticked off at your Neanderthal attitudes and politics and we’ve decided we’re leaving: “Legitimate rape.” is almost reason enough!

We in Oregon intend to form our own country and we’re taking the other Blue States with us.

In case you aren’t aware that includes New York, Hawaii, California, Washington, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and the rest of the Northeast.

We believe this split will be beneficial to the nation and especially to the people of the new country of The Enlightened States of America (E.S.A).

To sum up briefly:
You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches.
We get Andrew Cuomo and Elizabeth Warren. You get Bobby Jindal and Todd Akin.
We get the Statue of Liberty. You get OpryLand.
We get Intel and Microsoft.
You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole’ Miss.
We get 85 percent of America’s venture capital and entrepreneurs.
You get Alabama.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue. You get to make the Red States pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the Christian Coalition’s we get a bunch of happy families. You get a bunch of single moms.

Please be aware that the E.S.A. will be pro choice and anti war and we’re going to want all our citizens back from Afghanistan at once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have kids they’re apparently willing to send to their deaths for no purpose and they don’t care if you don’t show pictures of their children’s caskets coming home.

We wish you success in Afghanistan, and possibly Iran as well, but we’re not willing to spend our resources in these sorts of pursuits.

With the Blue States in hand we will have firm control of:
80% of the country’s fresh water,
more than 90% of the pineapple and lettuce,
92% of the nation’s fresh fruit,
95% of America’s quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners)
90% of all cheese,
90 percent of the high tech industry,
most of the US low sulfur coal,
all living redwoods, sequoias and condors,
all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools plus Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Cal Tech, Long Beach State, CAL, San Jose State and MIT.

With the Red States you will have to cope with:
88% of all obese Americans and their projected health care costs,
92% of all US mosquitoes,
nearly 100% of the tornadoes,
90% of the hurricanes,
99% of all Southern Baptists,
virtually 100% of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh, Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.

38% of those in the Red states believe Jonah was actually swallowed by a whale, 62% believe life is sacred unless we’re discussing the death penalty or gun laws,
44% say that evolution is only a theory, 53% that Saddam was involved in 9/11 and 61% of you crazy bastards believe you are people with higher morals then we lefties.

We’re taking the good weed too. You can have that crap they grow in Mexico.

Sincerely,
Stan Singer
Citizen of "The Enlightened States of America”

Secession is quite silly... to the point of absurdity (regardless of which side either proposes it, or condones it). Once it happens for the reasons stated there (and sadly, here too) , people will once again find enough differences between them that it happens all over again. And after that, the same thing... until America is reduced to 311 million little Napoleons, emperors of their own little, 1-acre empires, and, while looking quite adorable in the blue uniforms, become by definition, ineffectual, ineffective and counter-productive to the collective good.

However, I imagine that discussions of it does present us one absolute positive-- it allows us to separate useless and dogmatic political hacks from everyone else.
