(16,064 posts)I made a vow 4 months or so to stop voicing my opinions about things Obama has done or hasn't done until after the election. I am very glad he was re-elected.
The election is over. I will certainly say what I think. if that includes criticism of Obama then so be it.
He doesn't get a free ride because he's a Democrat.
But for now I'm just enjoying it......

(5,252 posts)...the Obama reelection committee 18 months ago. I listen to The Ed Show (radio) daily, and about 18 months ago folks were calling in telling Ed that he was going to be the reason Obama doesn't get reelected. It seemed about 18 months ago Rachel stopped reporting about things like wiretapping, Gitmo, Wall Street vs. Main Street, etc. Only Norman Goldman stuck to his principles.
I think it's tine integrity returns to MSNBC.

(13,305 posts)He needs to be pushed from the left. For the first four years the more left leaning among us were told "Shhhh! Stop pushing. It's his first term and change is incremental and we don't want to risk his re-election chances!! If he loses it will be your fault!!"
So we all united, turned out and got him re-elected. And as requested we got a bigger majority in the senate and we got some genuinely progressive folks elected to help him out in the Senate.
So now is the time for the left to be pushing. Within reason of course and not just flailing around and attacking without focus. But he should expect to be pushed from the left.
And in return now is the time for him to show us what his true vision for Government in this country is. Will his approach be more like the progressive Elizabeth Warren or more Mr. Austerity Paul Ryan?
We lefties must make our voices heard!
There is still much dross to be cleared from the Bush and Reagan administrations
and those harmful SCOTUS rulings in favor of corporations.

got killed in the House election. The House is still controlled by uncompromising lunatics. And since most of them just got re-elected they have absolutely zero incentive now to start compromising.
So I am not sure what the left expects Obama to accomplish. The only legislation that will pass the House is far-right to moderate right (if we are lucky) legislation.
Even IF Obama wanted to move left, and he just got re-elected after a center-right first term, he has no power to go anywhere with this Congress that we, the voters, just gave to him.
In fact, Republican calls for impeachment begin in 3,2,1...

(13,305 posts)It's not a matter of what we want him to accomplish. Sure there is stuff we'd like but personally speaking I understand he may not get it to pass because of the situation he is in with the aforementioned lunatics.
However, I expect him to be just as uncompromising on certain things. Namely social security, medicare, and Bush tax cuts.
So no, I don't expect there's any more of a chance of him being able to enact Single Payer, make gay marriage the law of the land throughout the country, and permanently legalize abortion under all circumstances. Personally speaking I will not criticize him for not doing things like that.
However, I do expect him to not agree with the lunatics and cut social security, cut medicare, or extend the Bush tax cuts on th wealthy. And if he does those things I will criticize him.
hfojvt
(37,573 posts)His plan is to extend about 73% if the Bush tax cuts, including $40 billion a year for the top 1%, $40 billion a year for the top 4%, and $163 billion a year (out of $301 billion in total tax cuts, so 54%) to the top 20%.
That's the best we can hope for if Obama fights and wins. If, instead, he "compromises", then the rich will get even bigger tax cuts.
I full expect him to "compromise", and then to declare victory in said "compromise". That has been his pattern.

(9,610 posts)or pulled by the left. Not pushed from the left.
But, he needs to move left. Go public with the right-wing obstruction. Shame them.
vi5
(13,305 posts)Yes, he needs to move left. I mean pushed from the left meaning "The Left" has to push him to take action on certain things. I meant the left as an entity of people and not a specific direction.
But yes, we agree.

Agree with me or not, but I believe that how we say something is just as important as what we say.

(37,573 posts)and they/we will be gnashing their/our teeth and wondering why.
Me, I am happy that Romney lost, but I have not been a big supporter of Obama since 12 December 2010, when "yes we can" becamse "oh no, I won't".
I also would prefer to see ALL of the Bush tax cuts expire than to see 735 of them retained like Obama wants, including a whopping 26.5% going to the richest 5% and only 13.9% going to the poorest 40%. Obama wants to extend them for the Romney-middle-classs, those with income less than $250,000. He could save them for the bottom 40% by extending them for incomes below $33,000 or for the bottom 60% by letting them expire for income under $53,000.
But both of those are off the table as Obama will push for tax cuts for those with incomes between $53,000 and $250,000 (which also includes much bigger tax cuts for those with incomes over $250,000.
In fact, it would not shock me if Democrats agreed to reverse the Bush tax cuts for incomes under $1,000,000.
It would sicken and disgust me, but not shock me.
Nothing Shocks Me Anymore.

It is also ahistorical, ignorant and petulant.

I am not looking for a savior, an idol or a rock star.
I am here at DU for policy discussions.
I am thrilled that O won. The other side would have killed off people like me ( mere hard working blue collar guy) with their policies.
But now I insist that newly triumphant Dems work really, really ,really hard for the policies that will help guys like me and our families.
I need the policies. Badly.
(SD, you got the sterilized website you wanted in the run up to the election. Now DU just might return to weightier things.
Sorry.)

(20,176 posts)personally, I'll wait for him to do something worth getting creamed over...like putting more SS cuts on the table to avert the "fiscal cliff" or giving in on the Bush tax-cut for top earners. As long as he's good to his word on economic issues, he's alright with me.
I mean I wish he'd reverse course on pot but thinking that is hardly creaming him.

(12,471 posts)But mark my words, as soon as Obama does something like he did with the Healthcare bill, and doesn't include Medicare for all as an option, not that, but something like it, I will feel compelled to criticize.
Nobody is 100% perfect, and I am a Democratic Socialist. I will be pushing from the left. I only hope that others do so, but today is a day of victory against the extreme Fascists. I will celebrate that for now, and only for now.

(5,116 posts)1. We can't hurt his chances next time; there is no next time.
2. He can do pretty much what he wants; no worries about reelection, but
3. He needs some public support for any bold moves. That's us.
