Kentucky banned all trans kids from sports to keep this one 12-year-old girl from playing hockey

Overlooked in the coverage of Kentucky's trans sports ban is the fact that there's only one trans student athlete in the whole state: 12-year-old Fischer Wells, who started a girls' field hockey team at her middle school. All this is over one 7th grader.

The target of Kentucky’s newly enacted law is Fischer Wells, a middle school field hockey player

Kentucky lawmakers forced a trans sports ban through its legislature this week despite the fact that there’s only one known trans student athlete in the whole state.

On April 13, Kentucky state legislators overrode an April 7 veto from Gov. Andy Beshear striking down a bill preventing trans girls from competing on middle and high school sports teams that align with their gender identity. In a statement, the Democratic governor said Senate Bill 83 “most likely violates the equal protection rights afforded by the United States Constitution because it discriminates against transgender children seeking to participate in girls’ or women’s sports.”

“Transgender children deserve public officials’ efforts to demonstrate that they are valued members of our communities through compassion, kindness, and empathy, even if not understanding,” he wrote last week.

But despite Beshear’s veto, Republicans bypassed his objections with a simple majority of both houses of the legislature. The GOP controls a supermajority in both the Kentucky House and Senate, and the veto override passed easily in both: 72-23 and 29-8, respectively.

Let these kids play sports. It’s good for their bodies and brains.

She wanted to play so bad she started her own team, and now other kids have the benefit of participating in team sports. She is an asset to her community.

Piss off, haters!

Beat up on the trans kid. Real he-man stuff there, folks. Constitutional rights are only there for the "right" people, not the ones who make you feel all ooshy.

WHAT THE FUCK IS THE MATTER WITH YOU PEOPLE, REPUBLICANS?

Speaking of disingenuous...

anti-trans women’s groups, which include the anti-trans scientist Emma Hilton, have provided evidence after evidence that women and girls are harmed by male-born trans people in their sports...
FIFY

We don’t want to stop trans people from participating in sport, we want them to participate in the sport of their birth sex.

Nah, y'all cry about this too:

No one, from any political party is ever going to be satisfied of course.

Perhaps it's time for schools to focus on education and get out of the for profit sports business.

Sports are important when you're young for fitness (getting into a habit you'll hopefully keep for life), teamwork, and enjoyment.

In very few countries are university sports "for profit" - the USA is just weird that way.

Many schools have to hold fundraisers to better support their sports teams.
Sports are not a profit center in the VAST majority of districts. (High school football in Texas being a probable exception.)

I'm not saying take recess away, but this is proving to be beyond the ability of schools to manage.

Id rather they focus on education.

They are only concerned with female transgender playing on female teams.

In the article the single individual in that position wants to play girls field hockey.

I’m assuming this is because they don’t think a “girl” can make the boy teams. In itself a sexist belief. Which due to a sizable overlap in the capabilities of the genders is a completely feasible.
