I was wearing my Obama 08 t-shirt with my sweat pants during my workout this morning. It's a nice one, navy blue with stitched letters and the Obama symbol.
Next to me, on the recumbent bike was an old man. When I was getting ready to finish my ride, he turned to me and this conversation began:
"Pardon me, but I don't think that t-shirt is an appropriate one to wear to the gym."
"Oh really? Well, I'm sorry, but I think it is."
"Well, I have freedom of speech too." WTF?
"Of course you do. I would never deny you that right." And then I walked away.
Weird.

(19,841 posts)you're strong enough to deal with the turkeys it could attract. It does worry me that this kind of thing causes people NOT to wear the shirt (or the sticker or button, whatever) when they know it will attract this kind of attention. This is a Rethuglican issue--I can't imagine anyone on the Liberal side giving somebody some stuff about a damn shirt. That is how tiny-brained they are. This is typical of their nasty behavior.
I'm gonna dig out my 2008 shirt today--you reminded me....Got my 2012 button and stickers (& yard sign even), but forgot about that shirt.

My sister actually got nearly run off the road (going over a long bridge) recently late at night--she has several stickers like "Scientists for Obama"--not too inflammatory you would think. It was very clear that it was an act of domestic terrorism. Didn't get any info for cops to work with. Her 22-year old daughter was in the car--she was so scared she won't talk about it to this day.
It's even worse now. Yeah, gotta be careful. They're dangerous.

(17,266 posts)But it's not about freedom of speech for them, it's about being incompetent at or incapable of using reason. They are generally very poor at using tools like reason and logic, so they have no depth of conviction in their political views. They don't realize that there is a way to ascertain the validity of a given opinion or position, so they must pour a great deal of blind faith into their position. In doing so, they inextricably tie those positions to their egos. Their political affiliations become a major part of their identity.
So what we wind up with are people who see speech running contrary to their positions as a threat to their very identities. Their egos cannot bear the notion that there are hostile ideas out there that they have no defense against. Interestingly, this is the main reason they become addicted to Fox 'News' and Rush: Those sources give them the false sense that their positions, and therefore identities are unassailable by hostile ideas. Sadly, at some level they know damn well that there is little real substance to their beliefs... which is why they respond with such hostility to any messages that 'threaten' them.

Or like the fundie belief that anti-bullying laws suppress their freedom of religion.
These people seem to think that if anyone expresses any idea or belief, however innocuous, that in any way diverges from the fundies' belief, then that person is attacking and suppressing the fundies' freedom of speech or freedom of religion.
Of course, the fundies feel perfectly comfortable attacking the beliefs or the freedom of speech of anyone who differs in any way from what tthe fundies believe!

(32,086 posts)Any time one of them or their mouthpieces says something nasty, and the left complains about it, they try to turn it back on us, claiming we're denying them free speech. See: The Chick-fil-A controversy. The CEO expresses homophobia. The Left gets upset and calls for a boycott of his crap food, and in calling for a boycott, somehow the Left is denying his free speech, even though he has always been free to spew his hate. This guy is probably just automatically acting on his latent reptilian brain reflexes in this regard.

(2,354 posts)that was somehow interfering with this old guy's desire to express himself?
No. His freaking 1st amendment right to freedom of speech is the right to express ideas and beliefs, etc, free of GOVERNMENT RESTRICTION.
So yes, he has "freedom of speech" and no, your wearing an Obama t-shirt can not possibly interfere with his freedom of speech since there is no government action involved. I'd be wearing my Obama shirt to the gym every day, and the next time he opened his mouth, I'd have a handout ready for him that explains free speech - I'd pull it together at about an 8th grade reading/comprehension level. I'd tell him I'd be glad to school him on anything else he missed out on learning during his education process over the years (because he is really old enough to freaking know this stuff - if he is going to quote the constitution, get it right).
There is simply a wave of people who seem to believe that the 1st amendment is their right to shut down ordinary people from expressing their views, if they find them unpleasant or contrary to their beliefs. And it has nothing to do with that at all.
jackbenimble
