"A Life Devoted To Liberalism"
McGovern was an unabashed liberal. However, IMHO his life was devoted to helping other people. His political philosophy had a liberal bent, but that headline reduces him to a word. In addition, it is a word that can be defined any ways.
McGovern was so much more than a liberal. He was a complicated human being who did his best in many areas to bring compassion. Don't fold his life up into one neat word and tuck it away into history as seven letters.

(17,111 posts)As I said, he was so much more than a label. Any word, but especially one that is open to broad interpretations, leaves McGovern's true legacy in the fog of definition.
That headline will sum him up very negatively for many people. I know headlines are restricted by space, but that one restricts him.
...sigh...

(17,111 posts)agreement at all on what it means. A headline such as that in these crazy times gives a very different idea of what he might have been like.
DU people generally are much closer to the charitable and original definition. The general public does not in the main. If they listen to any MSM outlet, a liberal might be an ally of Al Qaeda, Putin, and Hitler (when he leaves the island where Elvis, Judge Crater, and Jimmy Hoffa all reside) all rolled into one. Then again, a liberal might be Bobby Kennedy, MLK jr,,and Dorothy Day all rolled into one with some Jacob Riis sprinkled on top.
