Roger Federer has withdrawn from the French Open, citing fitness concerns: "Its important that I listen to my body"
World No. 8 Roger Federer has withdrawn from the French Open following his third-round victory, citing a need to rest, Roland Garros announced.
The 39-year-old won in four sets (7-6, 6-7, 7-6, 7-5) against Dominik Koepfer on late Saturday night in a match that lasted three-and-a-half hours. After the match, his third win in the last week, Federer hinted at reassessing his status in his first Grand Slam since January 2020 as he continues to ease himself back from multiple knee surgeries.
"After discussions with my team, Ive decided I will need to pull out of the French Open today," Federer said. "After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation its important that I listen to my body and make sure I dont push myself too quickly on my road to recovery.
"I am thrilled to have gotten 3 matches under my belt. There is no greater feeling than being back on court."

Does this mean the world is going to yell at Roger Federer for a week? Are "fitness concerns" more legitimate than "mental health concerns"?

(6,979 posts)Double-knee surgery. He attempted to come back earlier at a smaller tournament but couldn't.
Serena went out today. She also wasn't ready, and picked up a slight thigh & stiff back (which is what's being hinted at) which is unfortunate. At least she and Roger went 4 rounds at the French Open.
Hopefully both will be okay for Wimbledon in about 3-4 weeks.

That said, you rightly raise the question of mental health.
We have to assume that professional athletes read and understand their contracts as they relate to the broadcast rights companies and .media access to said athletes for interviews.
Where I agree with her is that something has to be done about the format of the press conferences and the asinine questions thrown at the players. Naomi's second set of comments on the matter clarified her position, but what she said originally created real questions about not understanding what she signed up for to earn those big dollars.
Experts suggest that she has always had anxiety issues during interviews. Now we know why. Sadly the big money comes with conditions and while she is a brave progressive young player, I'm not sure she'll survive the existing media circus.
There ought to be way more questions regarding Federer's withdrawal if he shows up at Wimbledon for he is yet to mention the word injury.

(12,511 posts)Piers hasnt weighed in yet to insult Federers family and accuse him of lying about his health concerns.
So, until Roger gets a proper taking down by that trump loving useless excuse for a human being character assassin, this worldwide scandal isnt over. Stand by for more vermin.
