H2O Man
(73,558 posts)has played a major role in creating the confusion, by spreading misinformation, disinformation, and purposeful outright lies. Day in and day out, television mixes these with small pieces of fact and even smaller grains of truth.
And of course, television is a passive form of "entertainment." I say that as someone who does watch television, and generally for entertainment purposes. There has rarely been a significant amount of "breaking news," for example, that one learns more about, almost immediately, due to television coverage.
To rehash a point that I've focused on here on DU many times, if one removed television and radio, turned off the bright, colorful lights and the loud music, tossed out the cell-phones and internet, hid the booze and other drugs, there would not only be a massive reduction in the loud laughter and excitement of our culture ..... there would be millions of people who would be lost, scared, and depressed. They would not have a clue. The very idea of reading books, much less the concept of the Power of Ideas, is lost to them. And those behind the curtain -- the very people who, by no coincidence, selected Willard Romney as the republican party's nominee, despite the widespread disapproval and contempt that even republicans hold him in -- find it much easier to deal with merry bands of fools, than with a single, solitary conscious person. They are capitalizing upon the ignorance and sheer stupidity of the masses.
I must say, however, that I remain an optimist. For as Holderlain said:
"Danger itself
Fosters the rescueing power."

Of course, television/radio have been dumbing down the masses quite effectively for a long time, but TV and radio are reaching a shrinking demographic (still significant but dwindling) since there's been a huge shift to online content.
Expect to see more confusion and targeted misinformation online as the Internet becomes more and more saturated with rightwing BS.

there is an inherent racism that has it's tendrils firmly intertwined into the right-wing culture, roughly just under half of our entire population. What we are seeing is a cult of racism that is simply exhausted with keeping their feelings quiet, personal, private. And the election of Barack Obama in 2008 sent them over the edge. Since then they have been manipulated by their "leaders" (including Limbaugh) to see that it's ok to let it all out. And their leaders have shaped their hatred into a significant voting block to counteract the voting power of the black/latino communities in America that they know will support the President.
Their support of the gutting of social programs and their clinging to their guns are, respectively, to prevent their tax dollars from supporting "the n***ers and the w***acks" on food stamps and welfare and in their schools, and for protection against same in some imagined race war that has been afoot since Reconstruction.
"What The Fuck is wrong with these fucking morons?" Racism and hatred for Liberals who look out for minority interests, and the voices that manipulate them, are what is wrong with these morons.

4 years after these bastard right wing businessmen preaching deregulation wreck the economy, they manage to put one of their own in the presidency. It would be madness!
This teaches the Right Wing that you could do anything bad (not just the deregulation wrecking the economy, but having an idiot president for 8 years), and within 4 years, the majority of the population will forget about it. People would only elect the Democrat to clean up the Republicans' mess, and then the Republicans will take over after that, until they make another mess...
This election, if the Right Wing steal it or even win it, shows that billionaires can outright buy the government.
And this election would, if Romney wins it or even that it is close, that Americans continue to become dumber and dumber (its so stupid for Americans enough to favor gutting Obamacare and let their Insurance company operate the "death panels" which choose if they live or die if they get cancer for instance, or rescind their insurance coverage (if they have individual coverage), using any excuse in their past history, just to get away from paying for any serious healthcare bills for them. They think their insurance is sooo good. "I got mine so screw you" they tell to the 50+ million uninsured Americans.)

I hate to be negative (normally I'm a pretty positive person), but quite frankly, I'd say the odds are good for a Romney win. The polls are close enough to steal, massive amounts of money are being spent to elect him, voter suppression is overt, racism is rampant (not even a dog whistle anymore), and even people who might SAY they'll vote for Obama, might not when they get in the voting booth because of that racism. And all most people, even on here, can do is bitch and get depressed about it. Of course it's hard to blame people for getting depressed when the Democratic Party's answer to voter suppression and outright electoral fraud is "GOTV".
Yeah I'd say break something. Like the fucking system that's oppressing us. Join the revolutionary socialist left and start trying to CHANGE IT! Militantly trying to change it.

(24,411 posts)...who doesn't swear a lot. However, I really share the tone and tenor of your message.
I have found myself completely depressed just listening to the news. I've had to shut it off. Normally, I have it on all day, as I work at home.
And it's not that Obama has given up a few points in the polls and that Romney has gained a bit. I am really not worried. I have faith in President Obama. I know that he and Biden will "bring it" during the next debates.
What I am most concerned about--and most depressed about--is that this country is full of completely lost idiots that we can never reach--and they can decide elections. I think there is a movement to actually NOT THINK in this country. Anyone who takes a serious look at Romney and his flip flops and lies--and then looks at what Bush did to this country---cannot possibly suddenly be smitten because of a cute debate performance.
But the reality is--there are complete non-thinking, anti-intellectual idiots out there.
I live up the street from a tea bagger who argued like a junkyard dog--two weeks after the mortgage collapse--that the banks needed to be further deregulated. OMG...I get a stomach ache just thinking about it. Glenn Beck tells these people lies and they eat it up like they're at an all-you-can-eat bullshit buffet. They don't think for themselves, and the neocon and corporatists are duping these useful idiots.
It's not Obama that is disappointing. In fact, I thought his shocked response to Romney's endless staccato of lies--was human. Obama, the adult showed up to debate a petulant child who lied and lied and lied. Romney is the one who should be ashamed of his performance.
Going forward--I think we have to realize how important our votes are. We must vote and we must take others to the poll with us and call our local Dem offices and volunteer. We can make a difference. These bamboozled idiots vote in high numbers--and we have to counter them.
But I understand your anger and your disgust and I thank you for sharing it.

As for the dumb fucked up fucking fucks who are trying to put the other dumb fucked up fucking fucks back in the fucking driver's seat... well, I think they're all fucked up.
Seriously though, I'm confident that we've got this, I really believe we're going to win this election. I just can't imagine Mitt Romney being elected President of ANY Country - no way.. America is not going to put this fucking idiot in the oval office. The only way he's getting there is if cheats. There might be a lot of dumb people in this Country... but there's a lot of smart ones too. Here's an example - check out the underground for a while, thread count, post count, even registered user count. Then check out the Free Republic.
We're winning hearts and minds, more and more every year I think. Even if Romney somehow ends up in the oval office, it will be but a temporary victory for a party that social evolution is slowly pushing off a cliff. I won't give in to despair no matter what happens - because I believe in humanity, in progress and in the idea that all people eventually want to do the right thing.
All that said... this victory will be ours. I'd bet every dollar I've got left (not much, I'm in college) that we will re-elect the President for another term.

My sister listens to NPR, reads Time and Newsweek and other magazines but is not a political junkie like me.I gave her this movie to watch and she said it was so scary on so many levels as she could see the US going in that direction. But she is firm in her belief that President Obama will win re-election. She talked me down several times when it showed McCain up and said, " no Obama will win". I'm hoping she's right again. But I can't believe how stupid people are to watch the debate last week and say Rmoney would be a better president. Stupid people not paying attention but drinking the sound bite kool aide. As soon as it sells, I will retire (actually quit my job.... no retirement other than SS), we will sell most everything (cars, furniture, etc.) and we are moving to Ireland. I have my Irish citizenship & passport and am eager to go. They have national healthcare & even though they are just beginning to recover from the ravages of the economy, things are looking better in Ireland - at least they care about their citizens . We plan to rent a furnished house on the west coast of Ireland. I've crunched all the numbers & between the proceeds from the sale of our house ($100 - 125K) & our SS (which will not have Medicare premiums deducted nor will we need to purchase a Medicare supplemental policy), we will be able to make it. If we stay in the US, I will have to work until 10 years after I die (I've crunched those numbers, too )

(3,891 posts)In addition to the stupidity of our fellow citizens, I am furious with the party. They failed to properly prepare the President for the debate, which has made this race a close one. The party failed to take the enemy seriously, they coasted into the debate, and expected to coast through it. I am angry about this, because the first rule should always be to never take anything for granted. Yet, it is obvious that our party took this election for granted.
How do I know this? Simple. Look at the advertisements we have been running? Any issue oriented ads? By issues I don't mean that Romney is a lying tax dodging ass, that is a good issue, but not the only one. I remember elections gone by where they would show a school, and then highlight the party or candidate position on the school. Or they would show a small business, and highlight the party, or candidates position on that business.
Why didn't we have ads ready to roll out the night of the debate co-ordinated with President Obama. "Sir, mention school funding and how we expect to address the issue." Then the next morning everyone wakes up and sees the President saying the words on the news, and then sees and hears the same issue highlighted in an ad. Then we win the debate, and the public support because they KNOW what we think.
Instead, we spent days screaming that Romney Lied, which gives the appearance of scrambling for a theme. Why the hell didn't we have a theme ready? The Republicans damn sure had one ready. The next day they had messages out highlighting Romney's lies like they were sainted truth. They stayed on message, while we scrambled for a message. We finally settled on one, besides Romney lied. We settled on Big Bird. It was the stupidest thing I've ever seen out of a campaign as a positive. Seriously, we are so far off message that it is at least two time zones away.
So instead of pointing to average citizens, and saying this is how the election affects you. Or this is how the issues affect you, and your neighbors, and your towns. We are saying vote for us to save Big Bird. While in the mean time Romney is free to lie to his hearts content, and the Press blasts us for running Big Bird ads. I'm not even talking about the Nazi's on Faux. I'm talking about those we normally quote regularly. Chris Matthews Blasted the Big Bird ads. &feature=player_embedded" target="_blank">The Today show blasted us.
We are running for the Presidency in an election that matters. We are spending tons of money to tell the people how we stand on trivialities, while ignoring the issues that matter. Why aren't we running ads that say President Obama saved our economy by pushing the Stimulus through? Why aren't we showing the bridges built, the roads that were repaired or built? Why aren't we running on the fucking issues?
Yes my fellow citizens are idiots, but so is my party. Because they aren't telling the citizens what they need to know to make informed choices in the election. No wonder they're falling for the Rethugnik crap, we're not telling them anything different. We're not making the point that our way is the best way. All we're doing is screaming that Romney is scum. True, absolutely true, but is that all we have to make our case with?

blasted by 'em.
Sooo, you are right and profound, wise beyond all.
We should just get drunk and watch TV.
After all that's what they want us to do.
No offense intended to you PCI, it is just the way things are!

(3,891 posts)Here on the net, we can discuss any issue, and come up with ideas that our party, and our nation, might consider. But if we are afraid to discuss those things, because of the response of a few, many good ideas and suggestions will be lost. Perhaps the answer to the problems we face is rattling around in one of our minds, but it is not thought of by the party leaders, so we'll never even consider it.
Well, in that case, I'm a problem. Because one of those things I hold absolutely sacred is the First Amendment. I will not yield my right to peaceably assemble to redress grievances because someone might not approve. We've seen that, it's the Rethugniks, and I'd rather crawl over broken glass than join them.

(8,636 posts)- Bush put us on the edge of another Great Depression. Ryan/Romney's economic plan is Bushonomics on steroids! The Romney years will be known to historians as The Greatest Depression!!!!
- Mitt will come into office accompanied by anti-science fanatics like Todd Akin, who will defund most science in the US, accelerating our descent into Third World Status!
- Any slight progress made on combating Global Warming in the last few years will be wiped out, probably taking the world past the point of no return!
- Demographics may be moving our way; but, a Republican win across the board would put them in total control of voting, which would probably make the US a one-party country, like unto the old Soviet Union, for decades!!!!
- Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be replaced with a far, far right Supreme Court Justice, assuring that:
- Roe vs Wade will be overturned!
- Citizens United will continue as one of a long line of pro-corporate, pro-plutocracy decisions.
- Roe vs Wade will be overturned!
Sorry about all the exclamation points; but, it's that or just writing OMFG every line!

(35,015 posts)I am baffled as well, that people can be so STUPID to actually vote for Romney, how can they do that?? Do they not understand? Apparently they don't, and I attribute it to ignorance, fear and indoctrination similar to a cult. It prohibits them from being able to think at all, being able to understand, being able to see the truth from the lies.
My 16 year old daughter asked me last night: "Mom, do you think I will have a good life? I'm worried about the environment and what's going to happen in this country". I told her "yes", but in my heart and I am not so sure.
I'm every bit as upset as you are.

(5,275 posts)A similar question runs through my mind constantly, and it's how so many people are so easily manipulated.
One case driving me nuts is the comeback of Obama birtherism thanks to that crank movie "Obama 2016". It seems that the state of Hawaii and the Honolulu newspaper went into cahoots to make Obama a citizen - and the paper went back in time to do it.
You can't convince people who are glued to Fox, you can't prove to them that they're wrong, they won't accept anything as impartial truth.
I fear for the U.S....I fear things may have to get a whole lot worse before enough people wakeup and quit being played to carry water for billionaires.

They are supposed to be non partisan but when the rich republicons own most of the media outlets it no longer is non partisan. Fix the so called free press and you will fix America. We need to hold a few trials, very public trials and then put some of these FUCKERS in jail. Until then, they'll just keep committing more and more crimes and get congratulated by their cronies for doing it and financially rewarded for doing it with tiny little fines and slaps on the wrist.

"Well, that's nice," I say. "When are you going," says me. "If Romney wins this election, Sophie (his dog) and I are headed to Merida." "That seems kinda drastic, Bob," I say. "The situation calls for it," says Bob.
I went back to my apartment and looked up Merida, Mexico. Seems like a great place! Wonder if he would like company.
