NEW YORK (AP) Wal-Mart Stores (WMT) says it's accelerating its expansion of small stores to compete with a variety of rivals, from dollar stores to drug chains.
The company told investors at its analysts' meeting Wednesday that it plans to have 500 Neighborhood Market stores and 12 Express stores open by fiscal 2016.
Bill Simon, president of Wal-Mart's U.S. division, says Neighborhood Market store have generated a 5% increase in revenue at stores open at least a year for the first half of this year. That's more than double the growth rate of the Wal-Mart's average store.
As of the end of July, Wal-Mart had 10 "Express" stores and had ramped up its "Neighborhood Market" concept to 217 locations.

It won't be long until half the country works for discount retailers. Clothes? Groceries? Prescription drugs? Doctor appointments? Legal services? Just come down to Wal-Mart, your one stop shopping place for life!

There will be nothing but Walmarts, and the boarded-up shell of Main Street in America, in a few years.

there are 6 new dollar stores within 10 miles of the Wal Mart in my small town.

Big stores can only subsidize these smaller stores for so long. Look for prices to be just
pennies lower than the quickie marts in some neighborhoods..and Wal*Nuts defending the prices
if anyone mentions it.
