Jim Lehrer: Ask Mitt Romney if He Stands By Mormonisms Views of Women
by Stacey Solie Oct 2, 2012 4:45 AM EDT
Why hasnt Romney been asked if he agrees with his churchs treatment of women? Stacey Solie on the weird silence.
----------------
At age 19, Mormon youths depart on two-year missions to spread the faith. Every Young Man Should Serve a Mission, states the churchs Aaronic Priesthood Manual. (At 12, boys are expected to join the Aaronic priesthood, as a transitory step on their way to joining the higher Melchizedek priesthood after turning 18.)
Women, however, are not expected to serve a mission and are encouraged to volunteer for one only if they reach the age of 21 and have no marriage opportunities. Even then, those who do go on a mission must address their (younger) male counterparts as elders. If a woman on a mission reaches someone who then wants to join the church, she must hand over the task of baptism to a (male) member of the priesthood.
At Sunday services, called sacrament meetings, women also play a lesser role. The bishop and his first and second counselors, all men, preside from an elevated stand at the front of the chapel. The sacrament of bread and water, blessed by 14-year-old male priests, is passed to the congregation on trays distributed by 12-year-old male deacons.
That dynamic, of course, should be familiar to Catholics; and Baptists, Muslims, Orthodox Jews, and even Zen Buddhists have also wrestled with ordaining women. But none of those faiths ordain every adult and adolescent male, so that the sacred authority extends so powerfully and thoroughly into the household.

(10,572 posts)one must be "worthy" in the LDS faith to hold the Priesthood - not every male meets the requirement (nearly all active males do, which is about 50% in the US and much less in most countries).

(10,572 posts)The LDS version of Heaven has everyone in it practically. The only way for a male or a female to make it to the highest kingdom of heaven is to be married (the man cant make it there without a wife, and the woman cant make it there without a husband.)
Murderer, thieves, blasphemers, liars, people who kill themselves all make it to heaven in LDS theology. The only people who do not make it to heaven are those that meet Jesus Christ in person and deny that he is the Christ in this life. The only way to do that in LDS theology is to have the priesthood - something only men can do.

(6,390 posts)...what religion they are or choose, even if its no religion or belief.
So long as they can choose to stay or leave. If men want to be subservant to women or vice versa....ask me if I care.
Sure they will automatically be indoctrinated in a faith or lack of one, but as even the Amish recognized, they will go through a period of rebellion and decide....."this shit aint for me" or "meh...I kind of like the the faith".
Thats one of the great qualities of this country vs. other nations, you can flip the bird to your old religion and choose another or not choose any. You have a choice! And that damn right, no matter how ludicrous it seems, is protected. Even the Soviet Union could not eradicate religion. If a person wants to believe in Thor, what right do you have to deny it?
