WEST BRANCH, Mich. (WXYZ) - A teenager bullied by her classmates turned the tables on them after a humiliating hoax and walked with her head held high at the homecoming football game.

Usually the football players who are the stars at a big game, but Friday night the attention went to someone off the field.

16-year-old Whitney Kropp waved to a crowd that supported her for standing up to the classmates who bullied her.

“I’m excited. I’m so happy. It’s just so much going on for me,” said Whitney.

This is a different Whitney than the nation saw see last week. The sophomore at Ogemaw Heights High School thought about killing herself after she found out her nomination to the homecoming court had been a prank pulled by her peers. But the small rural town of West Branch where she lives rallied behind her. Businesses donated things like her dress and gave her a makeover. Even students from the opposing team supported her with signs and banners.

It's in Michigan's 1st congressional district, formerly represented by Bart Stupak for nearly 17 years before the 2010 midterms.

I'm glad this student stood firm in the face of adversity and showed those idiot bullies they'll never win. She'll have a bright, prosperous future while her bullies will be collecting welfare.

Michigan has two peninsulas, you see. One is south of the straits between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, and one is north of those straits. The southern-most one is shaped like a mitten. The northern-most one kinda resembles a rabbit, although you probably have to be a long Michigan resident to see that.

West Branch is in the Mitten part, the lower peninsula -- in other words, the LP. It is on the eastern side of the peninsula just above the thumb of the mitten.

The U.P. is north of the straits. It is much more rural and a beautiful place to visit. There are also beautiful rural places to visit in the L.P., but the big cities and suburbs infringe on them. Fortunately, West Branch, where I live, and most of the U.P. are exceptions.

Longship, from Newaygo County, MI. Adjoining the Manistee National Forest.

I was trying to name the fingers-of-the-mitten part of Michigan's lower peninsula and embarrassed myself. Thanks for the clarification though!

Just don't make that mistake in front of a UP-anite. They do not take such so kindly.

Happy to help out. Non-Michiganders often do not understand what this LP/UP thing is here.

Why are human beings so cruel and so hard on people who are different than the rest of the same old same old pack?

One day hopefully they will realize it is the differences that make this world a wonderful place.
