Ugh! Senate GOP just KILLED $1b Veterans Job's bill, Dem's feel 2 votes shy of 60

http://www.rollcall.com/news/senate_gop_blocks_veterans_jobs_bill-217685-1.html?pos=hln

Senate Veterans' Affairs Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) said the cost of the bill, $1 billion over five years, is offset. She noted that a vote to block the measure is tantamount to saying the nation has done enough for veterans.

"A vote to support this point of order says that despite the fact that we have paid for this bill, despite the fact that one in four young veterans are out of work, despite the fact that veterans suicides are outpacing combat deaths, and despite the fact that more and more veterans are coming home, we are not going to invest in these challenges," Murray said.

The nation owes veterans "more than just a pat on the back for their service," she continued. "We owe them more than bumper stickers and platitudes. We owe them more than procedural roadblocks that will impede our ability to provide help now and into the future. We owe them action."

Murray continued: "We owe them real investments that will help get them back to work. And that's what this bill does."

4. I STILL don't get it that a simple majority of 100 is now 60.

Or did several more states get admitted to the union while I wasn't looking?

I wish that every single time the Repubs block legislation that ought to be passing by a simple majority, the Democrats would go very public with it. Very. Force them to do a real filibuster. Make them spend hours and hours reading from the phone book.

29. Totally agree.

Bernie Sanders filibustered December 10, 2010 and stupid legislation passed anyway. The threat of filibuster has become a 'gentleman's agreement' to kill a bill. Democrats without cojones.

As Gomer Pyle once said, "shame, shame, shame!"

38. every time they pull something stupid like this

is why when I make a prediction that Obama gets the white house and the Dems get the House. I can't say who gets the Senate. The conservatives have to be tossed. Including conservadems. Until that happens. shit like this will remain.

Flawed? Republicans say the spending violates limits that Congress agreed to last year.

Sounds lame.

Dems really need to hammer it that the Republican Congress have conspired to destroy all hopes of economic recovery.

Polls are still showing that Americans are disgusted with Congress but media coverage never goes any further than that. Here's one of the reason! I think it's time to use some of that dry powder!

Great.

Next time they start a war, the veteran support better be 100% or they'll find themselves in the middle of a war they started.

13. Lets have that ideological debate out in the open where everyone can see it then.

Who is looking out for America's war veterans, senior citizens, very young, very old, and very sick and who is looking out for the tax advantages of the richest of the rich.

To hell with conservatism, its greedy, its spiteful, and its unpatriotic.

A loud broadcast of THIS would

2) Point up the need to adjust the filibuster rule

the VFW or Legion. I put in over 20 years and I'll be damned if I'll join groups that just want to suck right-wing ass. They no longer can effectively represent the Veterans. Leadership within has been bought and paid for.

Wingers do not support the Vet. They might wave a flag, they might put on a bumper sticker. There ends their support. Wingers talk the talk, but very few ever walk the walk. Blood-lust as long as it is someone else's blood.

and the VFW and other veteran's organizations, won't be able to contribute to the GOP's political coffers and the pissed off vets, might not flock around people like Mitt and W and grin like big decked out pet possums, for the republican photo ops.

I'm a vet BTW, so put away your flame thrower.

My theory is that his strategy to re-take the Senate lies with votes that piss off Dems back home. While the House is adjourned, the Senate can set up the blue dogs. Just a thought.
