I’m not a police officer or firefighter, but I dealt with some similar things when I was in Iraq. Anything dealing with children is utterly terrible.

I have two daughters myself (9 and 11) and at times seeing them reminds of stuff from Iraq. I couldn’t imagine anything like I saw happening to kids in Iraq happening to my children.

I’ve dealt with a few suicide attempts a couple of years ago. Years of very regular treatment have really changed the way I look at life. Through the right balance of medication and regular psychology appointments, I’m finally able to enjoy life again and be hopeful and excited about my future.

First responders that deal with this stuff for years on end have my utmost respect and admiration. I only dealt with it for 13 months and it totally burned me out. Your perseverance says a lot about who you are.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?

This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.

As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
