http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_HOBBY_LOBBY_BIRTH_CONTROL?SITE=AP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT&CTIME=2012-09-12-12-09-16OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Christian-oriented Hobby Lobby Stores Inc. has filed a federal lawsuit over a mandate in the health reform law that requires employers to provide coverage for the morning-after pill.
The Oklahoma City-based chain sued Wednesday in federal court, claiming the government is forcing the business owners to "violate their own faith."
The business says it could be fined more than $1 million a day for not complying with the law.
Hobby Lobby calls itself a "biblically founded business" that is closed on Sundays.

(15,220 posts)Not that *I* ever really did; however, I have an elderly person who I sometimes drive and she sometimes wants to go to Hobby Lobby for crafts. I'll be much more inclined to steer her to Michael's next time.

(3,521 posts)There is the one which is the subject of this story that sells craft stuff. There is also a Hobby Lobby which sells model kits, radio control planes and the like. The latter has a store in Germantown Wi. As far as I know there is no connection.

(27,985 posts)My partner was unemployed for three years before getting a job at the Hobby Lobby that is being discussed. On some level, she knows she's made a deal with the devil but she was almost on the street before getting that job. (before she was part of our family)

(959 posts)I live in a small town (28,000) and there is a Hobby Lobby here. I knew immediately upon entering that it was a religious cult. the muzak is all hymns, Christian reading materials all over the place, of course, the not open on Sunday (but they have no problem about being open on patriotic holidays). I noticed something else; this is a small town, you see the same people over and over, but I have never seen any of the people who work their registers, stock, etc., outside of the the store, not ever. Either they are shipping them in from miles away everyday, or they really are alien pod people, because they don't seem to have any connection our local area. It's really kind of creepy. I rarely go in there, and it will be even less now.

(27,985 posts)One of my family members works for Hobby Lobby. She is highly conflicted about it, but she was also unemployed for 3 years prior to getting that job. She is a living, feeling, human being in a really shitty job.

(168 posts)I understand that based on their religious beliefs that they are against the morning after pill. They are perfectly free to exercise their beliefs in anyway they choose.
But they are a business, a business that is not in anyway religion based other than their own beliefs. They do not provide a religious product or service.
What gives them the right to FORCE their religious beliefs on anyone. NOTHING, their rights end exactly where their employees begin.
No body is forcing them to be in business. There is no law requiring them to be in business. That is their choice. A choice of their own free will. Therefore if they so choose to operate the business they must abide by all laws in the operation of that business. If those laws do not match their beliefs then they have a choice, either put aside their beliefs or get out of the business. Period end of story.
Is that harsh? Yes it is. Get used to it I say. Is it fair. Again yes it is fair. The law applies to every business, not just them.

(1,267 posts)It's pretty obvious from the prominent displays of craft items with a religious theme, but that didn't bother me. This is a free country, after all, and people can practice whatever form of religion they choose...............BUT, when they start trying to force their beliefs on others, well, that they do NOT have a right to do, and that is where I draw the line.
I have a bunch of kits that I purchased from them a couple months ago (i.e., too late to return for a refund) to amuse myself with while recovering from surgery that I never even opened. I'm wondering if one of the local women's clinics could find a use for them (sell them in a fund raiser, maybe?). Would love to tack a note to HL's front door advising that due to the actions of their corporate office in seeking to deny the women in their employ access to vital medical services, a donation of items purchased from their store has been made to (for example) Planned Parenthood for fund raising purposes.
Hmmmm............will have to make some calls.

(2,104 posts)their rights.
Then they should have moved on to a deserted island years ago and had no interactions with anyone else who doesn't follow their beliefs. No hiring people who don't follow their beliefs, no paying any taxes, no societal interactions with different thinking people at all ever.
Hobby lobby doesn't have to buy the pills and give them out all they have to do is pay an insurance company that doesn't deny coverage when they pay out. It is the choice of these companies/organizations to make this into an issue of 'someones screwing with my faith'.

(27,985 posts)I won't explain why but I've never seen that much anger in such a short time. Two people stormed out of the house, one looking like she wanted to punch the other.
