The hiring freeze at my office is now officially over. We've had both a hiring freeze and an hours-reduction for all hourly employees in place over the past 12 months so as to prevent anyone from getting laid-off. Last week, we were able to announce that full-hours would be back on the schedule beginning in Oct., and I was notified this morning that my staff of 18 is to be increased to 24 over the next three weeks.
Between that, the housing report this afternoon, and the profit-outlook from GM this morning, I'm feeling a sense of confidence in the economy that I haven't felt in quite some time. And, if this is the case and the economy is beginning to move with more speed, the timing of good news couldn't be any worse for Romney... bless his little heart.

(31,849 posts)business owners have held out as long as they can.
This weekend, my fox-watching, rwing conservative, small business (commercial electrical contracting - 45+ employees) owning friend actually told me that he has not bid on jobs (8 in the last 6 months - when he did not do 8 jobs all last year) because he did not have the personnel to handle the jobs and he wasn't going to hire more staff because of the "uncertainty of the business climate."
My response: "So let me see if I have this right ... You are turning down business because there is demand that you cannot meet at your current staffing levels; but you won't increase your staffing levels because you don't see the demand? Maybe you should revisit your strategic planning model."
