http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-09-02/at-church-with-romney-mormons-cheer-attention-to-their-faith.html... As Romney and his wife, Ann, sat in church today in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, congregants giving their monthly testimonials spoke about how his candidacy has helped the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by introducing the U.S. public to role models who reflect well on the religion.
There has never been as much positive publicity about the church, John Willard Bill Marriott, chairman of Marriott International Inc., said during his testimony, thanks to the wonderful campaign of Mitt Romney and his family.
In recent weeks, he said, we see the church coming out of obscurity, and we see that 90 percent of what has been written and said has been favorable.
Thats a great tribute to Mitt and Ann and their family for living such an exemplary life, Marriott said. With the new attention, Everybody is looking at us and saying, Are you as good as the Romneys? he said. ...

(290 posts)Yes, many things coming out of obscurity. Coming from Mr. Marriott who engaged in a series of complex and high-profile maneuvers, including "Son of Boss," the largest tax avoidance scheme in history and listed by the IRS as an abusive transaction. He reminds us all that Romney played a key role as chairman of Marriott board's audit committee.
Along with positive publicity, will come the negative publicity.

(30,540 posts)and heard about the church the more I think it's strange and the less respect I have for the members. Rmoney has done no favors for that church or the people that are members. I can't understand how a "religion" can condone whole cloth lying and hypocrisy.

(2,424 posts)For the record, half my family is devout Mormon. I was baptised a Mormon. I was practically disowned from some family members because I did not ever consider going on a mission. Not from day 1. Once you are in their archives, you face a lifelong effort of avoiding their repeated attempts to "welcome" you back. Sorry, I would rather give 10% of my income to State and local government so that a more diverse group can be helped.
The church has many good people that stress many good values and does many good things.
Having said that, I dislike what they have become. Like many religons, they have become too involved in national politics. They are attempting to impose their vision on everyone else by doing so. That is not the definition of freedom. That is not the definition of America.
I hope their welcomed association with Romney causes loss of interest and loss of potential members. I hope the effort they spend with missions is completely negated by their association with Romney. I wish this for the simple reason that such failure will make them think twice before becoming overly involved in national politics again. I believe that Romney will hurt their image more than they could possibly imagine.

(14,887 posts)in the last month than I've ever wanted to know. I now think it is a cult. Thankfully I know no one 'as good as' the Rmoneys. I know no one that dishonest or greedy.

(36,974 posts)Any 'church' or group that tells their members that they are not allowed to drink 'hot drinks' (coffee and tea) and that they are required to wear a particular kind of 'underwear' which btw is only sold thru the LDS organization - is a CULT.
And folks that listen to and then obey that type of nonsense are CULT MEMBERS.

(14,177 posts)They would borrow stuff and never give it back. They would complain if our lawn wasn't mowed while theirs was over grown (cause their lawn service guy got sick). They would make cracks about the neighborhood not being Anglo Saxon enough. The mister would talk about what a great self made man he was and make fun of my husband for not being a millionaire. They would harp on how the poor were draining resources while being thankful that banks got bailed out. They would insist on being first in line for everything. They would bring a bag of chips to the pot luck. When you ask them about themselves they would talk about how great their parents are. Gack. No wonder they need so many houses, no one can stand them.
