(4,404 posts)...and I'm not saying for sure it isn't.
Even at FACE VALUE, what exactly is he saying? What big stuff does the world need us to do? Start wars? Borrow more of their money? Export television shows?
What the hell is he talking about?

(5,477 posts)before making a judgment. It seems like he's not referring to the presidency.

(1,186 posts)He was previously talking about Neil Armstrong. He was referring to American ingenuity, courage, moxie, etc.

(2,940 posts)I am not American, so that likely influenced the way I heard it, but to me he was basically saying that only Americans can do and have done the "really big stuff."
Which I find gross, not to mention demonstrably untrue, but not as bad as a racist dogwhistle.
Of course a lot of people heard birtherism, and I completely understand that; I'm just offering my impression.

(21,925 posts)Here's the quote in full context:
"...God bless Neil Armstrong.
Tonight that American flag is still there on the moon. And I dont doubt for a second that Neil Armstrongs spirit is still with us: that unique blend of optimism, humility and the utter confidence that when the world needs someone to do the really big stuff, you need an American.
Thats how I was brought up. ..."
Considering the rampant birtherism in the crowd he was addressing, I don't understand why the speech would contain such a line. I'd think they'd want to avoid even the faintest trace of controversy in that direction.

(49,060 posts)Let's not make too much out of a statement by American who is proud of Americans while speaking to Americans about Americans.
There is so much other blatant lying and cheating and possibly illegal voting and tax fraud around Rmoney that it is a waste to get tied up in knots over something like this.
The Republicans are happy to have Democratic supporters spinning their wheels on this rather than the much more damaging stuff like Cayman Island tax shelters and his attitude calling Federal disaster relief immoral while there is a deficit created by relieving corporations.
