Much of the US seems to be having a pretty benign Winter so far. The normally snowy regions have what looks to me like late Autumn snowfall amounts, not the kinds of snows that are normal for Winter.
1816 is seen in history as the "Year Without a Summer." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer
Will 2011-2012 be the (first?) Year Without A Winter?

(51,122 posts)We also got six inches of snow on Halloween, which even freaked out the natives here.
Not saying the forecast is wrong, I'm saying that there are clearly going to be extreme swings here and there.

(60,212 posts)Here in Redding we've had no rain this month when the average to date is .95, we got .38 inches in December when the average is 6.27, and we got 2.62 inches in November when the average is 4.48.
Since July 1, we've had 6.33 inches when the average is 14.53, so that's less than half the amount of normal rainfall, most of which fell over two months ago!
The storm gates could open and bring us buckets of rain, but there's nothing in the forecast.
Here's the snowpack:

(67,818 posts)Do you have a similar picture from a year that was more normal?

(4,723 posts)Our local snowfall for December was .4 inches. I've seen more snow fall than that in an hour in December before. Today, January 5th, it is already in the mid-50s when normal is about 42. It has been in the 50s and 60s a lot during late autumn and early winter. However, the local tee-vee meteorologist said that some arctic oscillation was changing and by next week, and for several weeks, we would be getting a lot colder temps.

(60,212 posts)I know y'all probably think that we're a year-round furnace up here, but our winters are typically cold and rainy. The average max for early January is 55, and the average min is 35. The record high for January 7th is 72!

(67,818 posts)Well above normal, no? The current cold is a blip in an otherwise (so far) abnormally warm winter.

(4,267 posts)I'm 26 and have lived in the same city on the east coast all my life. A cold Christmas is really not the norm here. We've always had blasts of cold and then back to the heat.
To my recollection, Christmas this year was pretty temperate, low humidity.
Anything is better than hurricane season.
EDIT: Of course, the climate gets very different but a few hours away. It's often a lot colder around Lake Okechobee (they've had a hard freeze warning these last two days). My aunt lives in Ocala, a while northwest of me, and she gets snow. I've never seen snow!
