Charter school throws away school supplies

What a waste! While nearby schools and children's organizations budgets are cut and are struggling to survive. Harlem Success Academy on117th and 118th on Malcolm X Blvd. in Harlem is throwing away tons of new books and school supplies today. It is sad that they would not donate these needed resources to other schools and organizations in the Luckily neighborhood children and parents were able to dig through the discarded educational material and grab valuable supplies. One child said she found almost all the school supplies she needed for September-pencils,paper,markers,gluesticks,rulers - even a new Harlem Success drawstring bookbag! New math, reading and science books, new clipboards, notebooks, science supplies, scissors were thrown away. Paper, art supplies, furniture,pc cables, wifi routers, looseleaf notebooks, folders, reading lamps, globes, maps pens, markers and many other new items were also discarded. Ava Moskowitz, the founder of the school just asked for more money per child, from $1350 to $2000 for her school. I guess she can afford to throw away new supplies. As of 10pm they were still throwing things out. If you are looking for school supplies, I suggest you get out there tonight between 117th closer to Lenox Ave. . Shame on you Success Academy. I guess you are doing better than we thought. — with charter schools,

3. Unreal ~ Charters vs. Public

I worked in Public Schools my entire career.
After retirement as a Principal, I supervised student teachers for two major universities.

Some of the student teachers were at Charters .
In my view, those 4/5 Charters that I supervised were at the bottom of the barrel.

Lack of supplies, parents working in the office when the Secretary was late
(access to all the records) and the Principal only came once every two weeks.

And, the top one on my " Could Not Believe It List" was ~ the Parking Lot for staff/parents was the "Playground!"

I could not believe my eyes!

There's a lot of wasted materials all over.

I suspect we can see the same strengths and the same weaknesses in your average public school of choice, although they don't bring in the same levels of the most struggling families and learning disabilities (even when they want to, they still have lotteries that provide a hurdle).

The focus on criticizing charters instead of a wider critical eye on ALL public schools of choice is not helpful.

and we'll talk.

I can't even imagine the mindset that believes it's okay to do this.

Made it pretty far for being pretty transparent.

Hey, I know.... dig through the wikileaks and find something you can use against the Obama administration. It's there all right. Wikileaks performed a very valuable service, you should take advantage of it.

Just helpin' out y'know.

to make sure kids have what they need for the year. I'm sure my local schools are not alone.

Plenty of stories of teachers having to buy mass quantities of stuff so kids will not go without.

Unbelievable!

6. A logical consequence of running schools on a business model based on competition

Everything about this model is wrong for education. Here in Indiana they pit teacher against teacher within schools by mandating that a certain fraction of teachers be rated in the lowest category. Where's the incentive to share what works with your colleagues when that means you might be ranked lower than they are?

The same dynamic works at the level of entire schools. Someone I know working at a highly-publicized charter school talked about how their principal spent lots of time bad-mouthing a nearby charter, exhorting teachers not to cooperate with staff from this competing school, and casting aspersions on the students who choose to attend their competitor. So this move strikes me as more inevitable than shocking... though no less reprehensible for that!

There are still plenty of people who have the mindless throwaway mentality. The economic downturn must not have touched them.

I'm still waiting for my order to get in, but if I could stockpile stuff for my students, I would. Oh my goodness! All that stuff is worth thousands and thousands! Paper! Books! Notebooks! I need a new globe and some maps! I'm so jealous of those able to dig through all of it and use it for their classrooms.

Frankly I'm surprised someone hasn't said exactly that in this very thread...

You're seriously linking to a Facebook wall post? And the pic doesn't show any of what the post describes. I Googled it, and the only post I found that was pertinent was yours.

I'm against privatization of public schools, but I'm also against Public School Boards that dictate insane policies. Charter Schools are supposed to follow their charters - hence the name.

True that some Charter Schools use privatized management, and we should guard against that. But most Charter Schools do very good Public work and should be allowed to continue to do so.

I support Public Schools. Which means I don't support going after the "wrong enemy". And Charter Schools are NOT "the enemy".

I also support Truth. so, when you make your next post please link to something halfway believable.

This was actually sent to me by a teacher who works at a school nearby. She took the picture.

And no, I'm not sharing her name here.

is concerned, as I said before it shows NOTHING of what you claimed.

If you are looking for sympathy, this actually turns me AGAINST your cause! Since it is so obviously BULLSHIT!

If you want to win us to your cause, try an actual link that means something.

The fact that you link to such bullshit makes me AGAINST your point.
