http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/08/23/100-year-old-package-norway_n_1825464.htmlStocks in oil? Historical documents? A small treasure? Speculation over what might be inside a 100-year-old package that's set to be unsealed this Friday in a small town in Norway abounds, according to Verdens Gang, a Norwegian newspaper.
Verdens Gang explains that the package has been kept in a museum in Gudbrandsdal and dates all the way back to August 26th, 1912. It carries a note from a man named Johan Nygard, specifying that it is not to be opened until 2012.
There are few clues about what the package might contain. What is known is that Nygard was involved in local politics and that he reportedly walked up to the mayor and handed him the package telling him that its contents would "benefit and delight future generations," according to a video that was posted the Verdens Gang website.

This Friday, August 24th, residents of the town will finally find out what's inside. VGTV.no http://www.vgtv.no/#! will be live broadcasting the opening of the Norway package on Friday at noon EST.

Cannot stomach lutefisk. It is inedible no matter it's age.

(51,666 posts)she decided to try making lutefisk. I think she had only heard about it when she was living in Sweden. She can't possibly have eaten it.
She prepared it, with the traditional boiled potatoes and white sauce (how yummy, a completely white meal), and served it. I think it was the only time in my life I ever saw MY DAD take a bite of something and then refuse to eat any more - he would eat anything. I ate one bite and declined any more. My mom did the same. My sister turned red and apologized, and couldn't eat a single bite of it, it smelled so bad.
We NEVER tried it again. I don't think there is any way on earth to put lipstick on THAT pig.

(71,611 posts)I was brought up in a Norwegian-American family. Both my maternal grandparents immigrated from Norway 1916-1919 as well as his brother, my grand-uncle, and wife, my grand-aunt. Sons of Norway gatherings were regular as I grew up. Smorgasbord was my grand-aunt's tour-de-force... she was an amazing cook.
My grandfather LOVED lutefisk. The smell is VERY strong... but it tastes like fish-flavored wallpaper paste. Uffda. From Thanksgiving to New Years, lutefisk was served several times. (It's the "season" for it.)

(33,688 posts)exceedingly German family. He would eat cold, leftover lutefisk for breakfast. I'd sooner stand on my head in a bucket of live squid. We Germans in the family regarded this behavior as perverse beyond belief.
Tried the stuff once and the sensation of eating fish jello almost made me urp. The smell ain't no picnic either.
ETA anyone who use "uffda" in conversation is by definition an expert on things Scandinavian. I picked it up from relatives and say it occasionally. When I was in grad school I once leaned back and said Oh, Uffda! in the presence of a Jewish friend from Lawn Guyland. "What's this 'uffda'? What's up with that, anyway?" he asked. I explained that it was Minnesotan for "oy vey." He got the point.

(62 posts)Ah, those Smorgasbords at the Sons of Norway hall. Not just lutefisk but Herring! Served 950,000 different ways! Blech! And guess what? It's still just bait. With lutefisk it's not just the smell, anything that turns the silverware black can't possibly be good for you!
Uffda back atcha!

Does anyone else have a bad feeling that the package contains material from the 300th anniversary of the Battle of Kringen?
I have no idea when they're going to open it.

Right now on the screen they're just showing a picture of the package from earlier.
