GOP vice presidential contender Paul Ryan declined to explain what is meant by "forcible rape" in abortion legislation he co-sponsored with embattled Rep. Todd Akin.
Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman, and Akin are among the 227 co-sponsors of the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act," which would prohibit federal funding of abortions except in instances of "an act of forcible rape or, if a minor, an act of incest."
Akin, the GOP nominee for Senate in Missouri, touched off a furor with remarks Sunday about women's bodies being able to prevent pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape." He has since apologized repeatedly for his remarks, but top Republicans -- including the GOP presidential ticket of Mitt Romney and Ryan -- have called on Akin to quit the race.
"Rape is rape. There is no splitting hairs over rape," Ryan told KDKA-TV in Pittsburgh, when asked twice about the "forcible rape" language. The interview aired this morning.
Romney has said that if he is elected president that abortion would be allowed in cases of rape. During Ryan's first race for Congress in 1998, the Journal Sentinel newspaper reported Ryan was opposed to abortion in all instances except when the life of the woman is at stake.

(28,158 posts)If you believe that "rape is rape" as the president has stated, why then were you involved in the writing of, and support, the legislation restructuring the definition of rape to "forcible rape?"
Second, What exactly to you does the term "forcible rape" mean?

(20,851 posts)they spend there career doing one or two wacky incredibly unpopular things, then run for major office and get to blow them off. And time and time again the media accept that. I mean this whole redefining rape is MORE central to Paul Ryan and why he's in politics than his whole budget crap. Of course when they are elected the media has to pretend to be shocked when the wacky things they always stood for suddenly they push once in office.

(24,411 posts)I'm pleased that the MSM is covering this. In fact, I am breathing a sigh of relief, because Paul Ryan wants to be vice president of this country.
He co-sponsored a bill with the infamous Todd Akin. This bill specified that Medicaid would only fund abortions for pregnancies that were the result of "forcible rape." This bill, HR3, was introduced with one reason, and one reason only.
The previous bill allowed Medicaid to fund abortions for pregnancies resulting in rape. These Republicans, including Akin and Ryan--wrote, introduced and co-sponsored HR 3 because the word "rape" was changed to "forcible rape."
These misogynistic, sociopathic sickos need to explain. And Paul Ryan damn well better explain.
He put a lot of energy into HR3. So making the distinction between rape and "forcible rape" was incredibly important to him. So important, that HR 3 was crafted.
Paul Ryan! Please tell us all what "forcible rape" is and what the differences are between rape and "forcible rape."
We're waiting.
