Gratitude: The Most Important Character Trait Missing from the Republican Party

Gratitude: The Most Important Character Trait Missing from the Republican Party

Liz Granderson in her article “Why America doesn’t like Mitt Romney” hit the nail on the head. “There are moments in some of Romney’s speeches in which he comes across like the guy who doesn’t wave when you let him into traffic, because in his mind, he was able to merge on his own.” I really think she is spot on, but limiting the comment to Mr. Romney’s likability is a bit too limited. I think this is a broader problem within the Republican Party. They have lost their sense of gratitude.

Republicans are now coming off as ball hogs. We all remember the kid on the team who, no matter what, once the ball came to them, they were not going to let it out of their hands come hell or high water. These people usually end up being a huge detriment to their team because it becomes all about them. They think that they are capable of winning the game all on their own, and if you would just give them the ball and get out of their way, the will win the game. That hardly ever happens, if ever.

"gratitude" works too. "You didn't build that. I did it all by myself. Get out of my way, worthless scum."

which is perhaps another way to sat some of the adjectives floating around here. All the conservatives I know feel entitled -- they feel like "them" (some vague other party) is responsible for some (vaguely defined) hardship in the lives of the conservative.

The gays are ruining marriage.

The "illegals" are ruining our economy.

The liberals are making it impossible for a business to survive

And so on.

Things you will never hear a conservative say:

- I am sorry I misjudged a whole class of people

- I guess I was wrong about climate change and I can see it was harmful to my neighbors to fight progress on that

- I understand that I or people close to me may need a safety net someday

Leaders are group conscious and act for the benefit of the group. Rulers egotistical and only think of themselves and their power.
