Why some believe Akin can survive controversial comments

http://www.kshb.com/dpp/news/political/why-some-believe-akin-can-survive-controversial-comments

""It's no secret that Todd Akin was against abortion even in the case of rape and incest," Glorioso explained. "A lot of Republicans have that position."
On Monday afternoon, Akin's staffers tweeted that he is in the race to win it and included a link to donate. Glorioso said Akin might still have a shot, even without support from the GOP.
"The grassroots of the Republican party and the Tea Party people may setup and just flood his campaign treasury with money," he said.
As of Monday night, a new Public Policy Polling survey showed that -- despite his controversial comments -- Akin was still technically leading McCaskill 44 percent to 43 percent in a statistical dead heat.
While 75 percent of Missouri voters said they believe Akin's comments were inappropriate, they still plan to vote along party lines.

1. What they're NOT saying is that he lost a full ten points. He was all set to kick Claire's ass.

When word gets out to all those who watch reality TV instead of the occasional news show, McCaskill is going to pull ahead.

I highly doubt the GOP have somebody better to throw into the race at this moment with a hope to win.

I also highly doubt that his comments are a shock to most of HIS voters. He may have lost some moderates but I don't know Montana enough to know if they'll be back on the fence.

Yep, Akin can still win. We're already seeing two things happening. First is the rallying of the fundies and anti-choice forces who have long attempted to codify and demonize a woman's right to choose. Akin's fault is he spoke too publicly about what is winked and nodded at on hate and religious hate radio day in and out. It's a backlash at those "feminazi" (translations: women who won't submit to men's demands as "the bible says&quot and the "sexual promiscuity" that surely is the base cause of abortions. Thus if a woman gets preggers she obviously was enjoying it and thus wasn't raped...conveluted and twisted "logic" or "science" to support a regressive world where women are once again chattle and minorities are "in their place".

The second part is a freak out from "establishment" rushpublicans...the big money guys. They are promising to buy this election for their billionaire benefactors and Akin may screw up that promise. They figure if they cut off his money he'll immediately fade or submit. That doesn't appear to be going over well with some of the great unhinged who are now convinced that Akin was set up in some "librul" conspiracy.

Today will be interesting...a battle between the money and the "base"...

5. Let them think Akin's still leading by a point.

This thing is way too fluid at this point to measure. In a few days McCaskill should be leading by a good margin.

Also, don't forget that Akin also was advocating the repeal of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 as "outdated" before he started talking about "legitimate rape"...

They want to get rid of Claire McCaskill more than they want to distance themselves from him. They'll pump millions of dollars into anti-McCaskill commercials come mid-October. That's what he's counting on, and I think he's going to get it. I hope she's prepared for the huge smear job they're going to wage against her.

Because, the republicans have a hell of a lot more money than she and her party do. And, they are still perfectly capable of swamping her message with their pack of lies and smears.

The right wing religious nuts will support this guy. The right wing plutocrats will support this guy. The right wing rednecks will support this guy.

When you stand back and think about it, only people who care about women's rights to make decisions about their own bodies are taken aback by his comments.

If this were Iran, a guy like Todd Akin would be a Mullah.
