Gatewood was a recognizable figure around Lexington and the state, both because of his imposing height and outspoken views on everything from legalizing marijuana to outlawing mountaintop removal. His autobiography, "The Last Free Man in America Meets the Synthetic Subversion," described a bucolic childhood in Carlisle where he caught the political bug as a young boy when he saw a July 4 speech by Gov. Bert Combs. He spent the latter part of his childhood in Lexington, attended the University of Kentucky and UK School of Law. He was married twice and is survived by three adult daughters. In between campaigns, Galbraith worked independently as a criminal defense attorney, but often quipped, "losing statewide elections doesn't pay worth a damn."

(111,094 posts)I met him once quite a few years ago and talked a bit with him. He was campaigning for Governor. He was for the legalization of marijuana.

(60,071 posts)He lived in the old YWCA at that time.
I walked in, was standing there and Gatewood came out of his bathroom. All he was wearing was a towel and flip flops. He acted like he was unaware a party was happening. He saw me, welcomed me and offered me a brownie. The rest of the night was a blur. I do remember two very pregnant nuns, and a guy in a loin cloth.
Gatewood was always very kind and generous. He was a staunch supporter of the family farm. He also did a lot of pro bono work.
I'm sure Woody Harrelson and Willie Nelson will be here to pay their respects.
I will look for some photos I have of him.

(11,212 posts)Kentucky politics just won't be the same. It's sadly ironic that the new Ag. commissioner is backing industrial hemp legislation.

"Did my father's generation hit the beaches of Normandy and Iwo Jima so that I'd have to pee in a cup to hold a job in America?" (also during his 1995 campaign for governor)

Now they are both gone.

The Paddock/High on Rose crowd is dwindling.
We'll burn one for you.
Liked his Dad too.

Certainly those are the people who came together to stop the slaughter in Vietnam, and I'm proud of that. Compared to 'Republican,' I'll take 'hippie' every time."
