(3,709 posts)and yes, there are many retirement villages in Florida, but few as large as The Villages and Century Village. I lived in Miami for ten years and one of my friends had a family member in The Villages near Ocala and characterized it as having a lot of Jewish residents. Not certain what that percentage might be.
Sekhmets Daughter
(7,515 posts)It is a huge community near Ocala, with many retired military....While you don't need to be rich to live there, it is not for the poor. In fact you can Google it and find a website that will give you the demographics including average retirement income.

(7,515 posts)Nah, the rich don't retire to the villages. The "comfortable" do. Large retired military population. Yes, most of them vote republican...
Bluenorthwest
(45,319 posts)and that's not rich. They are mostly Republicans and nearly all white.

(61,599 posts)The very wealthy live in more exclusive enclaves.
It's infuriating to me that so many of these retirement community residents vote Republican. If not for social security and Medicare they would never be able to afford to live there. They would be eking out existences in small apartments, with no assistance with transportation or meals, or living with relatives.

(53,339 posts)The area also is reported to have the largest concentration of Medicare recipients in the country.

(4,252 posts)98 percent white. average age 66...no children allowed to live there. and owned by republican. Most likely the audiance screened to not allow any democrats.

(4,252 posts)I met one this past winter in Florida...She was from a gated community in NJ and was moving down to a gated community in Florida on the east coast.
When she discussed Obama with me I felt so sick to my stomach...She actually told me in March that Obama did not show his birth certificate. I know she hates him because he is black. It cemented my feelings that I would never return to the USA and spend my hard earned money. I am going to Europe for my vacations.

(45,319 posts)about AIDS and minority communities of color. Should I conclude that 'many Canadians' are like those guys, who were vile, vile people? Or is that sort of logic jump reserved for the Jewish folks?
You are off base about the demographics of the Villages. Some would suggest learning facts prior to spewing generalities.
riverbendviewgal
(4,252 posts)I had never been there but have been to other gated communities.
This was a woman I met and she was not a passing stranger. SHe is much closer as she is the relative of my bf.. ....sorry I offended you. I was offended by her remarks about Obama.

(7,515 posts)As a resident of Palm Beach County, FL whose children earned money in high school and college waiting tables, I can tell you that your Canadian cheapskate tipping habits won't be missed.
How's that for a stupid generalization?
riverbendviewgal
(4,252 posts)True, there are some right wing Canadians. I know them myself and can't be around them.
True there are tight wad tippers.....I am not one as I worked the tables as did my late husband and late son and my other son.
But I am noting that the climate of change and what I see happening disturbs me greatly.
True there are wonderful people like DUrs here on this site but the amount of money that is pouring into the Republican campaign seems like a tsunami to me. Plus there is the voter suppression AND the voter machine fraud...
I have been to Florida the last 4 years for winter.. Each winter it seems to me more and more changes to the right. It actually scares me. I am sorry to lump you all in this one basket. But truly it seems to me the government is changing and not for the benefit of the middle class or those who are in need.
I am a widow. I lost my husband and younger son to cancer. I did not have to worry about medical bills. It was hard to continue on but there was no poverty and I could retire early from a stressful job that gave me a pension and I had the government pension and survivor benefits. It seems that the Republican party does not want this for the average blue collar middle class citizen, like I am . I have no wealth. but I do have peace of mind and some money to keep me retired comfortably.

(114,904 posts)that's what I'm calling you on. I'd bet almost anything that there aren't many rich jewish retirees who are birthers, and I'm puzzled as to why you'd make that claim.

(4,252 posts)My own boyfriend is Jewish....My son was engaged to a lovely young woman born in Israel....He died in 1999 at 26 years old..from a brain tumor. .She married last year and just had a baby this month...She told me her baby has 3 grandmothers. I will never have blood grandchildren but I have this little one now and my older son who now lives in England has two stepdaughters and they are half Iranian and half English.
I raised my boys to be world citizens and to respect all. I did not raise them in any religion.
I have many Jewish friends. I believe my polish grandparents who came from Poland were Jewish.
Sorry I offended you. It has made me aware to be careful in mis speaking.
But I have to say this lady is in a very large circle of people who do believe that Obama was not born in the USA. I was quite shocked and saddened.

(16,168 posts)of how it's called the "bubble" by residents in that everything is provided for them right there without ever having
to leave the gated confines. The article mentioned that Democrats are pretty much ostrasized and there is faux
news and it's allies broadcast from the speakers inside of lamp posts throughout the place.
The guy that made it famous is worth upward of $500,000, 000.00 and has made the place it's own taxing authority ala Disney world.
Prickscott usually speechifies there and even had a budget signing ceremony where the Democratic side of the res-
idents were not allowed to attend.

(2,091 posts)I live there, so I know of what I speak. Anyone driving into the "gated community" enters by driving in the left lane at the "guard house." The guard automatically raises the gate and lets you come in, while the residents in the right lane swipe their ID card to open their gate. Why you ask? Well, all the roads are county roads and they can't keep anyone out. The Villages is comprised of 3 counties, Lake, Marion, and Sumter. The taxpayers fund the county roads. Some of the villages have another gate with no guard, so you drive in the left lane and push a button to raise the gate. It's all perception of security.

(6,247 posts)How's the golf there?
I'm a WSU transplant down in Broward.
spartan61
(2,091 posts)but I am not a MI retiree. Actually retired from CT. Not a golfer, but golf is VERY BIG. The executive golf courses (and there is one in every "village" is free for life. I can't think of any activity that isn't there to do. The place is unbelievable and actually not expensive. Of course there are some villages that cater to the 1%, but for the most part home are very reasonably priced and in all price ranges.
Do you get back to MI often? I haven't been there for 4 years and when we do go back, we make sure to spend a day on the MSU campus. BTW, my dad wanted me to go to WSU.
