Mitt Romney said he has "paid taxes every year, and a lot of taxes" when asked about Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-Nev.) recent accusations that he hadn't paid any.
"Categorically, I have paid taxes every year and a lot of taxes, a lot of taxes, so Harry is wrong," Romney said when asked about Reid's recent comments. "Harry Reid really has to put up or shut up... I understand what you're trying to do. You're trying to deflect the fact that the job numbers are bad, Americans are out of work."
Romney ripped Reid and President Obama for a series of "misleading, false attacks" though when asked why he wouldn't release more years of tax returns to prove Reid wrong, he dodged.
"You can go on our website and you can see my financial disclosure statements going back to 2002, you can also see our tax returns from 2010," he said, promising that when the 2011 tax returns were ready they would also be released.
Romney then said that Reid's attacks proved that even if he did r

(13,992 posts)He may have paid taxes to whatever state he claims to be living in and to whatever foreign country where his money is residing. And he might be trying to claim that taxes paid by Bain are "his" which they are not.
Unless...and this is just a possibility...he's lying and really didn't pay any.
His foot is caught in a bear trap, and the fact that he's not releasing the returns just proves that whatever is on them is pure poison.

What are you hiding Mittens? If you paid all the taxes you owe, then what are you afraid of? Why are you afraid to let us see just how successful you are?
Show us our money, Rmoney. Show us our money.

(27,461 posts)Why? If Harry Reid is lying so bad about him, you'd think he'd be so mad that he would prove Reid a liar, by simply releasing his returns, which is a normal thing for candidates to do.
So why isn't he?

Whereas Romney seems to have put wealth before power...
Also, Cheney produced 10 yrs of tax returns.

(19,458 posts)even with an extension, you're supposed to file something and pay what you owe.
That asshole is reworking his 2011 taxes as we speak, to sanitize them.

(22,308 posts)The beautiful thing about this is that he really can't delay any longer than mid October. He must file them by then.
The more we keep this in the headlines the longer he will wait, trying to get away with just one more year's worth. I am sure he is hoping for some big news story to steal the spotlight for a while and he hopes to make a Friday news dump of them and then move on.
If we can force him to keep holding onto them until the very last moment then Rmoney will be the first candidate in history to reveal a devastating October surprise about himself.
This has the potential of seriously damaging his candidacy just a few weeks before people go to the polls.

(42,779 posts)I haven't finished and filed my return for 2011 either, so I for one can't attack him for not having filed 2011 yet. The only thing you have to file with an extension request is a one-page form and you have to have paid enough to cover your final tax bill, or you end up with a penalty and interest.
That said, its important that the pressure be kept up on his failure to release earlier returns.

(111,110 posts)When asked by a reporter the other day if he had paid more or less than the 13.9% paid in 2010, Romney said that he did not know. And that he would get back to him with that information - which he never did. He has paid a very minimal amount of taxes, if any at all.

(37,163 posts)Speaking of deflecting, Mitt's been overly-specific enough in past replies that I feel the need to go into weasel-prevention mode.
So what if they'd be "subject to distortions", Mitt? You subject Obama to distortions every time you open your maouth or run an ad. have you even once accurately characterized anything he's said?
Harry Reid isn't the one running for president. And no one is legally required to vote for you.
How many jobs bills have your fellow Republicans passed? Versus how many anti-choice bills, or even "name a post office" bills?

He's trying to turn the narrative around on Reid, but I suspect that voters will not be fooled. Or, at least, voters that were undecided. Those that are Romney's base were planning on voting for him if it was revealed he kicked puppies, ran over children while driving recklessly, and intentionally polluted the Salt Lake with nuclear waste.

(42,770 posts)1. Mormon Tithes
Mormons are expected to fork over 10 percent of their income to the Church of Latter Day Saints. And that fact leads us to two theories.
First, Rachel Zoll of the Associated Press speculated that Romney doesnt want to remind evangelical Christians that he belongs to what many consider a non-Christian cult. The Republican candidates commitment to the church is a double-edged sword in the contest for the presidential nomination, she wrote. Many GOP voters are Christians who do not consider Mormons to be part of historic Christianity. Romney supporters worry that details of his church donations contained in the tax returns could fuel opposition to him based on his religion.
But it may be the other way around perhaps he doesnt want to piss off Mormons. After all, the right-wing Daily Caller reported that in 2010 and 2011, the two years for which Romney released partial returns, it looks like the former Mormon bishop under-tithed the church, paying 7 percent of his income one year and 9.7 percent over the two-year period. As the Caller noted, Romney recently told Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace, I made a commitment to my church a long, long time ago that I would give 10 percent of my income to the church, and Ive followed through on that commitment. So, if I had given less than 10 percent, then I think people would have to look at me and say, Hey, whats wrong with you fella dont you follow through on your promises?
Of course, if he were sheltering additional income in offshore accounts, then the degree to which the Caller says he shortchanged the Mormons might be even greater.
2. Things That Might Infuriate the Base
Mitt Romney, who just four years ago was dubbed the conservative alternative to John McCain is probably, as he claims, severely conservative. But when he wanted to become governor of Massachusetts, he played to that states politics, swearing to protect a womans right to choose, saying that climate change isnt a socialist plot and generally being reasonable. He passed the precursor to Obamacare, which he now condemns as a sign of looming tyranny.
Rick Newman at US News and World Report wonders whether Romney really stopped supporting those causes when he claims to have converted himself into a far-right Republican. Could he have a bunch of itemized deductions to, say, Planned Parenthood listed on those returns? Wed be wrong not to speculate.

Got news for you, Willard: People like you are a dime a dozen. (47,953 posts)I imagine the property taxes on his beachfront La Jolla house with the car elevator are pretty stiff, even with prop 13. They are deductable on his income taxes, though (I think). But income taxes? Those are for those peons too poor to afford good tax accountants and overseas shelters....
On edit, he bought the beach house in 2008 for 12 million. So prop 13 isn't helping him there.
