And Mitt's gonna pick the Easter Bunny for VP.

(131,370 posts)I suspect that whatever he filed was/has been 'clean,' prepared well by well-paid tax lawyer/accountants. The 'unclean' part is the tax code which has allowed this to take place.

If he was paying zero for ten years, he'd obviously know. I think Reid just exposed another big fat lie.

That's the point of this "It might be legal; but it just ain't fair" drill.

(14,881 posts)and the US offered amnesty to those who had hidden money in Switzerland to avoid paying taxes, so long as they came clean, admitted what they did, and paid all back taxes, plus interest and penalties.
The first year Romney refuses to release taxes for.
Coincidence? We'll find out when he releases 2009, his and Ann's.
Jackpine Radical
(45,274 posts)the amnesty may certainly be among them.
Reid would, of course, only bring up something he knows about. And 2009 is a year later than the records McGrumpy's people saw, so he may not have documentation about this later circumstance. Or, if he does, he's waiting for the right time to drop the next shoe.
This could be a long & interesting campaign.

(12,482 posts)he probably paid virtually no taxes on his 2008 income since so much of his comes from capital gains, and that is the year the stock market collapsed.

(135,425 posts)And who knows if he took advantage of an amnesty program, where his sins were forgiven if he just coughed up the money he owed?
Released tax returns might reveal that.
It is obvious that withstanding the storm of demands, mockery, insult and WTF-ing that will not go away is BETTER than releasing those returns. Otherwise, he's release and let it go.
That tells me that where's there's smoke, there's a frigging ten state forest fire going on.

(14,255 posts)He says anyone who pays any more in taxes than he has to is not qualified to be president.
But that much-reviled group of people who make so little money that they - following the same rules (ostensibly) as the Mittster - don't make enough money to have to pay federal taxes - why is it bad for poor people but admired greatly for the rich?
I would love to see someone ask Mitt that question.
Hey, maybe he can pick a poor person for VP!!!
Fucking hypocrite.
Just thinking about the purple-faced tea-partiers frothing at the mouth about people too poor to pay taxes, when the rich people who are greasing their skids pay as little as possible or none at all if they can help it - what a bunch of fools. It is the rich who are living large off the backs of the middle class.

(18,219 posts)We know that they will vote for him. And it is a waste of our time to give a shit about them. (Think about it, we are the same in that we would not be caught dead voting for Romney.) But there are many people who are not committed to either party or candidate, and THEY are the important ones to reach.
Andy823
(11,495 posts)I think there are some republicans that are on the fence about Romney, and if they they think he didn't pay taxes for 10 years, or if they find out he paid those taxes but has other skeletons hiding in his tax returns, they won't be happy. Now they won't vote for president Obama, but they might not vote for Romney either. The ones who already think he is a member of a cult but "might" hold their nose and vote for him anyway, could be swayed also into simply not voting at all!
I also agree with you that a lot of independents would be very unhappy and would vote for president Obama if they think Romney has been cheating on his taxes, or not paying any at all!

(45,274 posts)Surely a bunch of high-priced consultants could put something together that would pass muster, especially among the media illiterati, who could then ignore any more scholarly analyses.
As long as he doesn't submit the fake forms to IRS (and there would be no reason to do that), the IRS isn't allowed to expose his chicanery, so who would be able to prove otherwise?

Knowingly providing false tax returns would be digging his grave with an earth mover.
I would imagine that it would raise all kinds of red flags; things for people in the know to dig up and verify. If the Mitt's return(s) turned out to be fake he would be toast.
Fuddnik
(8,846 posts)Re-jigger the numbers, drop a few credits and losses, and voila! You have a clean, legal tax return.
I'm sure he'd be willing to pay a few million in taxes to end his conundrum.

romney did.
i suspect that there is more in the documents than just simple finances. romney, himself, predicted that if more returns were released that his enemies would twist the truth and make up stuff. i wonder what the information suggests?
he may have problems, like one suggested above, concerning where and when he voted over the last decade. this is really the sort of evidence he does not want to release.

(20,138 posts)It's not just about the dollar amount of Romney's net worth.
It's about the fact that Romney is completely clueless about how other people live nor does he care. He supports policies that enrich the already-rich at the (literal) expense of the poor and middle class.
Does that describe Kerry? How about the Roosevelts (FDR, Eleanor, TR) or the Kennedys (Jack, Ted, Bobby), all of whom were born into very wealthy families. No. They were rich and yet they fought for those who were not. They were in touch. They cared.
If Romney were fighting for the poor like FDR did then few people would care about his mansions or horses.
