What Ever Happened To ZPG Or The Idea Of Sustainable Growth?

Family values promoting unlimited population growth are decimating the planet. We are now headed to 9 billion in population on a planet that cannot support 7 billion at a decent level of life. If we do not address global warming and over population the planet will make its own adjustments.

Most of our problems in the world are centered around lack of resources for growing populations. Now with global warming and severe drought and rain cycles food production is being threatened. It is already obvious that we are stripping the oceans in such a manner that protein production is most likely declining.

In the end denial will not matter to our species because the Malthus scenario will take over. When anthropologists and archaeologists look at what happened on Easter Island they know that the population stripped that island of all the resources that were needed to support that population. Easter Island is just one small example of what is probably happening to Earth.

Sadly everywhere you look on the planet species other than us are under distress. Wild areas are disappearing at an ever faster growing rate. Potable and usable drinking water is disappearing for larger populations of third world populations as well as populations in developed countries.

The only thing that conservatives conserve are ways to doom the planet. The rich are already working on sequestering the most important resources for themselves. Gated communities, no taxes for the rich and austerity for the 99% are already an example of what people like the Koch's are up to.

and people have really limited their families. Most of my old boomer friends just had one or two kids. The same goes for the younger nurses I worked with. All people could think about was feeding, clothing and educating them with side trips into things like band camp. There is nothing like an extra kid to derail the American Dream.

To many people this seems to be a serious problem, and for a long time it looked like we were headed that way, but as I read about it the current problem that most of the industrial nations face is a declining population, something that in economic terms is far worse than our current situation.

China actively managed their birth rate to make it decline and they are raising their standard of living. The WHO and other organizations have gone around the world promoting birth control. Among the highest incomes and standards of living in the world is Germany while their birth rate has fallen to a 60 year low and is well below the rate needed to sustain their population.

Seems to me that mindless capitalism and manufacturing goods that are designed to fail in 18 months and be manufactured, transported, financed, retailed, and replaced again and again are what got us into this mess. Burning mega fossil fuel for a huge population is a problem. Now we face crop failures due to weather extremes. Something's gotta give.

You end up with less and less young people to support the elders. Plus many industries would falter, such as home building.

Something has to give at some point. And it seems to me that if we actually had a citizenry that supported the government, we would be able to support the elderly without cranking out more kids.

and nothing that we haven't been dealing with for the last several centuries. We found different ways to do things during the industrial revolution, improving the lives of millions who formerly spent their days in menial jobs of thankless labor. We found different ways of doing things as the computers of the information age eliminated millions of desk jobs. Both of those were on a larger scale than negative population growth - which we have had off and on in the US since 1931, if you separate out immigration.

Every age has its problems to deal with, and the problems of declining growth are much easier to solve than the problems of endless growth - given a finite planet.
