I mean, I know the Church’s horrible history but where I lived when I was younger, Catholics tended to be more liberal than Protestants and not as certain that everyone was “damned to hell”. It’s my personal experience in New Mexico that Hispanic Catholics are more liberal than evangelical Hispanics, even on issues like abortion and gay marriage.

The fastest growing American religious sect is Latino evangelicals. They tend to be far more RW than the average Latino Catholic. This explains to a significant degree why the Latino vote is sliding to the Right.

I have posted on this for years here.

A few years back, the US became the first remotely modern nation with a large Latino/Spanish/Portuguese Christian population where the majority were NOT Catholic.

Has never been much of a problem for some Catholics.

Franco considered his fascist regime 'Catholic Spain,' and with good reason. Conservative Catholics overwhelmingly supported him during the Spanish Civil War, and for all of the years he reigned.

Bavaria, birthplace of the Nazi Party and home to its most ardent supporters, has long been a Catholic stronghold. Hitler was Catholic until he died. So was Reinhard Heydrich. Goebbels, Rudolf Höss, Josef Mengele and Heinrich Müller came from Catholic families. As adults, they varied from quiet about their beliefs, apathetic about religion, to more-or-less antagonistic.

In fact, the church hasn't shown much aversion for authoritarian right-wing regimes. For most of its history the church adored traditional monarchies with no representative governments challenging the authority of a king--or the church working hand in glove with one, either. They rarely demonstrated interest in speaking out against right wing dictatorships in the modern era. Oh, the occasional rogue priest or nun might raise a stink about them in the modern era, but the church itself?

Not so much.

Infer from all that what you will.

7. It gives me joy to hear a man speak like this. Not because he's right, but because he's wrong.
Tue May 14, 2024, 10:23 AM
May 14

There will always be those who are wrong. They will always be with us. We grow as a society when the critical mass of people hear and believe the truth, which takes time. Consider MLK. He spoke truth in the minority and it was so powerful it became the majority. If we forbid this type of speech, it will fester, balloon, and grow. By letting them have their views and their ways, however wrong, it releases the "steam" from their engine. I don't mind the Chiefs employing this man based on his skill and not his beliefs. When we legislate or enforce 'truth' and 'righteousness' (as we are wont to do), we cause the problem to fester and grow. Consider our current predicament with MAGA. This grew from marginalizing, sidelining, despising, belittling, and legislating against the beliefs of what was once the majority. Our righteousness caused our predicament. We must let the weak and the mistaken speak their ideals and have their space. We must let them express their ideals and then rightfully criticize and show the error of their ways. We must win with love and tolerance, not righteousness. We must preach our own ideals and let them compete with the wrong-headed intolerance, as difficult as this may be, for it is in this way that we win people over to the truth.

I was raised in the most fundamental, backward, intolerant and selfish cocoon imaginable. I had to free myself when there was very little in society to teach me of the better way and the real truth. Today, we have an abundance of resources to help people escape this prison of self-hatred and intolerance. Let us not make the mistake of trying to force our ideals on others. It is quite enough that we show others the truth and let them decide for themselves. If they choose to live as intolerant assholes, let them suffer the pain they so desire and the ostracism they will encounter without hating them and without forcing what we know is the better way. This is the balance in human existence that we know works best and leads to a more perfect society.

So, I find joy in hearing the intolerance and selfishness of this filthy rich speaker. I see his hypocrisy on full display. I know he will have his followers and supporters and I want to see them, know them, and recognize who they are to protect myself. I want to show him and his followers love in order to confound his beliefs and confuse his followers. I want them all to see that my happiness is not dependent on putting down this man and his ideals, but on loving him in spite of his mean-spirited ideals and his erroneous beliefs in what Christianity can afford to our society. I know some will not appreciate the way I choose to handle this type of vitriol, but I have learned through hard work and sweat and tears that this is the best way for me to cope and to find strength and, indeed, to create a more perfect world for our children.

I believe that the Obama years, when pot was legalized and gays could get married, when their "Obama is a muslim" and "he wasn't born here" was called inane and stupid instead of just proving them wrong and then ignoring them, when the economy improved for the rich instead of the middle after the great recession, all lead to TSF. (And much more.) Here, I am very critical of Obama. He recovered the economy by supporting the wealthy. He ignored Trump blaspheming him, saying he was above all that. He should have attacked them head on before ignoring them. He should have used the recovery to improve main street instead of wall street, the way Biden did. And, the left, my side, didn't help. I won't go into it here on this forum, but we haven't handled the rapid change of the 2010s very well. I say this as a gay man who is grateful for all the change. We could have done it better, and we need to in the future.

Yes, we give them more rope. Yes, we give them more air. Yes, we show their errors and hypocrisy. Then, we embrace them and tell them we're all Americans and our differences are our strength. It's that last part we are having such a hard time with right now. That, I believe, is how we prevent another Pendejo45. Just my opinion and I'm very open to your ideas, too!

Peace

“I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you. Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.

“I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I’m on this stage today, able to be the man that I am, because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.

“I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all. Homemaker.”

Some women actually do. And I'm happy for them because they're happy.

Some women don't care one way or another, but will lie about it because they're being taken care of in a transactional relationship, and that's what fulfills their needs.

Other women don't feel fulfilled very much, but will lie about it because they find themselves in an unequal mom and wife career path through either their ignorance or their social group expectations, and they don't know how to or are too afraid to get out of a relationship that doesn't fit and is increasingly miserable.

Three reasons women will always tell the men in their lives they "feel fulfilled being a mom and wife" whenever asked.

Being in a traditional relationship should never be forced.

And overall smugness?

Mahomes has an out brother and is very supportive of his wife. The two of them are active in women's sports in KC and were a couple of the founders of the Current. They actively worked to get a stadium built only for the pro women's soccer team.

Travis Kelce doesn't talk about his views that much but talk has been that they're similar to his girlfriend Taylor Swift. Jason has made positive comments about support of the LGBTQIA community and Travis has stated he agrees. We know that he has said that he'd like to be a "girl dad" like his brother and has also supported women's sports. He was also the first player on the Chiefs to take a knee a few years ago, which is still mentioned on occasion around here.

I don't think the biggest draws to the team agree with their kicker.

This kind of idiocy is encouraged and promoted by crazy radtrad media like EWTN, Relevant Radio, Ave Maria Radio, etc. They have successfully "Google-bombed" the internet such that only the most reactionary groups appear at the top of a web search. This makes it look like these groups have institutional Church standing that they in fact do not have.

Working as an aide in a Catholic hospital I saw more than one or two women die needlessly in childbirth because they followed the church's ban on birth control and went against their doctor's warning. Some of them left a family of children without a mother. And I also tended to a large number of nuns with stretch marks on their abdomens. I often wondered what happened to the babies they probably had and who the fathers were. It is fine to be a practicing member of a church if that is what you want. It is not good to shove your beliefs down anyone else's throats.
My sister and her hubby are Evangelicals who love the orange one and believe he was sent by God to get us through the end times. I believe he is trying to cause the end times if nothing else. We still speak but she knows better than to preach to me. I blocked her husband on my email account for trying and when she asked why, I told her. As the grandmother of 3 LGBTQ members, when she started a spiel about homosexuals I shut her up in a hurry. I told her she could believe whatever she wanted to but that did not give her the right to diss any of my grandchildren. Jesus said that his father loves ALL of His children and as He loves them so should we love one another so I guess she is not a very good Christian. That put a fast end to the conversation.
I am not a Chief's fan but if I was, I would not have a good opinion of their kicker. And judging from some of the groans during the speach, I got the impression that some of the graduates felt the same way.

Most kickers do whatever they can to ingratiate themselves to teammates because lots of football players don't think of kickers as football players.
Many go way out of their way (Kevin Butler & Robbie Gould, come to mind) to hang with defensive & offensive lineman.
This guy is doing the opposite. It only takes a few of the "real football players" to politic the coaches about finding someone else. And, teams seldom have much invested in kickers, so replacing them is not a high cost.
Now, a tool like this may have already have manifested his idiocy, so they know already.
But, there's a difference between working with a jerk & working with one who goes out of their way to make it clear just how big a jerk they are.

After 50 years of watching these guys lose, I decided that I will ignore ANY of their political beliefs until they retire or leave the team...

That being said, I'm crazy abt Patty Mahomes even tho his whole family sounds like Trumpers! Ewww...

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are WONDERFUL people!!!

That town Mahomes calls home. It's where scared white people go when Tyler is too liberal and (especially) too brown for them.

So not a surprise that the guy has right-wing thugs in his family. It's sort of the norm around there that everyone is related to one of the traitors.

As it turns out, in the 80's we owed a home 6 blocks from where he currently lives. His house is actually not bad, it's not all the way there but does exhibit a bit of mid-century modern, a style which I have discovered in the last ten or so years that I'm actually quite fond of.

Interesting as well to see the estimated price on Trulia, around $3.2 million. Definitely not SoCal!

But you know, I moved there for a job, never had the sense that the white folks I met moved there out of a sense of feeling 'scared' from whence they came.

Don't expect him to be a product plugged like #15 or #87, you won't be any white people say "Shut up and kick" to him
