Trump administration calls Venezuela's election a 'sham'

He should know about sham elections.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration on Monday dismissed Venezuela’s presidential election as a “sham,” vowing to take quick action to ramp up economic and diplomatic pressure on President Nicolas Maduro’s beleaguered government.

Vice President Mike Pence asserted that it had been “neither free nor fair.” He called it a “fake process” whose result was illegitimate, calling the move to hold the election “a further blow to the proud democratic tradition of Venezuela.”

Even before the vote, the United States had urged Venezuela not to hold it and insisted that any outcome would not be considered legitimate.

Hand Over Your Weapons

Hand Over Your Weapons

If gun-control advocates really want to stanch the blood, they'll have to persuade more people of the need to confiscate millions of firearms

The logic of gun control lies, at bottom, in substantially reducing the number of deadly weapons on the street—and confiscation is far and away the most effective approach. Is there any conceivable turn of events in our politics that could make confiscation happen? And what would a mass seizure look like?

...

The United States’ astronomically high rates of firearm violence aren’t rooted in some unique American propensity for derangement and delinquency. Studies show our levels of mental illness and basic criminality are on par with other wealthy countries.

Other common explanations, like the social fissures created by our racial diversity, have been debunked by researchers, too. The only explanation left—an explanation borne out by a number of careful studies—is the sheer size of the American arsenal. There are 310 million handguns, shotguns, and semi-automatic weapons in American homes, garages, and waistbands.

Ultimately, if gun-control advocates really want to stanch the blood, there’s no way around it: They’ll have to persuade more people of the need to confiscate millions of those firearms, as radical as that idea may now seem.

Maryvale High Students Wear Hijabs To Show Solidarity With Muslims After Trump Ban

Even in Arizona they fight trump's racism!

It was a scene straight out of Donald Trump's worst nightmare: On Wednesday morning at Maryvale High School in West Phoenix, a group of students showed up wearing hijabs. They said their student government members encouraged them to do it.

In fact, the news that Trump had signed an executive order temporarily banning travel from seven predominantly Muslim countries made students even more enthusiastic about participating.

“We've had this planned for a while but we're putting more effort into it because of the executive orders that have been placed,” explained Ruby Arriaga, a Maryvale senior and the student body executive administrator, who wore a hijab for the day.

“People are scared and we just want everyone to know that our voices can be heard, we've all got each other's backs.”

Before you freak out and start calling up the principal and ranting about sharia law, some necessary background:

World Hijab Day is an international event, celebrated on February 1 every year. It was founded in 2013 by Nazma Khan, a Bangladesh native who immigrated to New York as a child and was the only hijabi at her Bronx middle school.

The idea isn’t to convert anyone to Islam, but rather to spread cultural awareness by teaching non-Muslims about the significance of the headscarf. It's also intended to build empathy by giving participants a chance to experience the discrimination that hijabis face every day — from unwelcome stares to outright hostility and violence.
