The role of Black women in U.S. politics

From yesterday:

As stated previously, I'm hoping Kamala, with her prosecutorial background, persuades Joe to, at the very least, bring serious charges against Trump and Barr.

I don't care if it's a news outfit, an activist org, a UN Observer Group, or a Church of Satan congregation! I do not trust that goddam weasel, or anyone else who is close to Trump.

Canada: New $37B COVID-19 aid package extends CERB, expands EI and adds 'recovery' benefits

Source: CBC

Kathleen Harris · CBC News · Posted: Aug 20, 2020 12:36 PM ET

The federal government is extending the Canada emergency response benefit (CERB) by one more month and revamping the employment insurance program to allow more people to receive financial assistance during COVID-19.

The suite of benefit reforms, aimed at helping Canadians through the transition as the economy gradually reopens, is expected to cost $37 billion.

Measures include greater flexibility on the work hours required for EI, making it easier for people to qualify for a one-year period.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough announced the new measures during a news conference in Ottawa.

"We're doing our very best to support all Canadian workers and leave no one behind," Qualtrough said.

Vladimir Putin's prize pupil is almost ready: Trump's final exam in authoritarian rule

Chauncey Devega writes in today's Salon. . .

Children imitate their parents and other role models. It is a rare occasion when a parent explicitly says to a child "I am going to teach you today." In that sense, Vladimir Putin is the father and Donald Trump is his fawning, admiring child.

Trump has repeatedly said that he may not respect the outcome of the 2020 presidential election if he loses. Like Putin, China's Xi Jinping, Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan and other authoritarians, Trump is eager to change his country's laws in order to stay in office indefinitely. His interference with the U.S Postal Service in order to sabotage mail-in voting is part of the same strategy.

Acting on Trump's commands, Attorney General William Barr and acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf have created a de facto secret police force to be used against the regime's "enemies" — meaning the majority of Americans who do not support Donald Trump.

Trump is reportedly marshaling a force of 50,000 "poll watchers" he hopes to use to harass and intimidate Democratic voters on Election Day. He is using Fox News, the One America News Network, the Sinclair Broadcast Group and (soon) the once-revered Voice of America as his personal mouthpieces and propaganda machines.

In many ways, these final weeks before Election Day are a type of final exam in authoritarianism for Donald Trump and his movement.

I urge you to read the whole article. Some seriously scary shit!

Trump's Goat Is Officially Gotten

Donald Trump does not like to be criticized. He likes it even less from someone who really knows how to push his buttons. Even worse is if it's a woman, and still worse than that is if it's a woman of color. There was no question he'd see Michelle Obama's Monday night address, and that it would infuriate him. The only question is whether he would give her the satisfaction of reacting publicly. And being who he is, it was not the least bit surprising when he went on a Tuesday morning Twitter jag, composed of a dozen or so Tweets. The "highlight":

Looking back into history, the response by the ObamaBiden team to the H1N1 Swine Flu was considered a weak and pathetic one. Check out the polling, it’s really bad. The big difference is that they got a free pass from the Corrupt Fake News Media!

Later in the day, Trump mocked the fact that the video was clearly pre-taped, as the death total noted by the former first lady was far too low.

It really should go without saying that drawing attention to H1N1 is politically unwise, because even the most uninformed voter will notice that they cannot remember an occasion during the Obama presidency where the nation (partly) shut down, and 170,000-plus people died. That is rather indicative that Team Obama was more effective than Team Trump, not less so. Even worse is crowing about Michelle Obama's fatality figure being too low. That's like saying: "Ha! She said I went bankrupt three times! Doesn't she know it's six?" or saying "Michelle Obama claimed that I am accused of sexual misconduct with 15 women. Shows what she knows—it's actually 25. Dummy!"

In short, lashing out like this may make Trump feel better personally, but it can only hurt him politically. And this is a dimension of the campaign worth keeping an eye on. During the 2016 campaign, there weren't all that many prominent Democrats willing or able to goad Trump into temper tantrums. Maybe Bernie Sanders or Bill Clinton, but Hillary Clinton largely refrained because she knows that some voters don't like so-called "nasty" women, and the Obamas refrained because as sitting president and first lady, they were expected to be above the fray.

If Trump can't bite his tongue—and you know full well he can't—then he might be manipulated into shooting himself in the foot multiple times in the next 80 days.

Keep tweetin', little boy, keeeeeep tweetin'!
