Obama didn't call John Kelly when his Marine son died in action, White House official says

Source: ABC News

Adding to the continued drama over whether past presidents have called the families of fallen soldiers, a senior White House official told ABC News today that then-President Obama did not call John Kelly, now the White House chief of staff, after the death of his son in 2010.

The retired general’s son, 1st Lt. Robert Kelly, died in action while serving with the Marines in Afghanistan.

Kelly and his wife attended a breakfast for Gold Star families at the White House in 2011 and sat at first lady Michelle Obama's table, a person familiar with the breakfast told ABC News.

But the breakfast, scheduled to be hosted by the Obamas, was six months after the death of Kelly's son. It's unclear whether President Obama contacted Kelly about his son in any way prior to this.

Help. I'm trying to find the Senate roll call on the bill that helped fuel the opioid crisis in 2016

Thanks. I'm not a very effective Google searcher.

Poll: Democrats' lead in the generic Congressional poll at 14% (up from 9%)

A new CNN poll finds Democrats leading Republicans 51-37% in the Congressional ballot.

Here you can see that the last CNN poll had them up by 9%. Something is going on that is taking Republicans' numbers down, and that's good. Now remember, these are registered voters. We need to go out and vote in 2018: https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/other/2018_generic_congressional_vote-6185.html

Portugal and Spain wildfires: Dozens dead and injured

Source: BBC

A spate of wildfires in central and north Portugal which started at the weekend has killed at least 31 people, civil defence authorities say.
Dozens of the 145 fires still raging are considered serious, a spokeswoman said.

To the north, fires which broke out across the border in Spain's Galicia region claimed at least three lives.

Thousands of firefighters are battling the flames, which erupted after a hot dry summer.

Is there a punishment for Trump not meeting deadlines on Russia sanctions?

As reported, Donald Trump is not complying with the sanctions ordered by the Senate, and signed by himself: https://www.lawfareblog.com/white-house-misses-deadline-begin-implementing-new-russia-sanctions

Is there any penalty in the law that Trump could face if he ignores this order? I would hope the President is not above the law.

Jill Stein must immediately speak up against Oliver Stone, just accused of sexual harassment

Oliver Stone is being accused by model and actress Carrie Stevens of forcefully grabbing her breasts.

Since Oliver Stone reportedly voted for Jill Stein, she must now condemn him immediately.

Stein must be treated the same as Hillary Clinton, who has been asked by journalists to condemn Harvey Weinstein.

Human ashes and bones found in wildfire ruins (California)

As in Puerto Rico, the official death toll in the California wildfires is not reliable. Officials say many missing people may not be able to be identified, ever.
It is a very sad situation.

Cover-up? Vox analysis: Puerto Rico death toll far higher than official count

Governor Ricardo Rosello, a Trump lover, says that 45 people have died as a result of Hurricane Maria. But a Vox analysis of news reports in Spanish and morgue bodies finds that the death toll could be in the hundreds:

Senate Democrats worry Russia could jeopardize reelection bids

Source: Politico

Democratic senators fighting to hold on to their seats next year are increasingly worried about a troubling reality: Russia appears set to mess with U.S. elections — again.

The bipartisan leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee warned last week that Russia's second straight attempt to upend a major election appears certain. They pointed to hacked emails, fake news stories and other evidence of interference in France, Montenegro and elsewhere over the past year as signs Moscow remains determined to monkey with voting.

Democratic senators such as Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania and Jon Tester of Montana — who hail from states President Donald Trump won in 2016 — know they're already facing stiff reelection challenges.

Now they’re concerned the Trump administration is dragging its feet on thwarting sophisticated Russian cyber operations that could have significant impact on their races — and could even sway which party wins control of the Senate. The red- and purple-state Democratic seats are top targets for Republicans hoping to expand their two-seat majority in the Senate; Democrats likely would have to hold all of them if they are to have any hope of retaking the chamber.

Russia is already promoting the hashtag #HarveyWeinstein where they blame Democrats for the sexual allegations against him.

Trump's FEMA is doing a horrible job with the wildfires

It is now mass mainly FEMA's job to contain the California wildfires, but reports cite continuing loss of property and missing people.
Republicans have contributed to these tragedies by opposing measures to curb global warming. The last they can do is put out the fires and they can't even do that.
