Hilarious new GOP conspiracy theory...

I've seen online posts that say, "Now I know who it was that he kept looking at to his right" or "So that's why he kept nodding during the debate."

Just off the top of my head:

Every other Congress in history, including the infamous "Do Nothing" Congress
The collection of squirrel tails on Donald Trump's head
Painful Rectal Itch (The SNL sketch, not the actual affliction)
Insurance seminars
Root canals
Todd "Legitimate Rape" Akin (24% compared to Congress's 21% in latest polling)

Facebook post obliterates today's GOP meme...

"We don't belong to government. The government belongs to us."

A friend on Facedbook shared a Romney for President graphic this morning that was emblazoned with the line above. As is predictable, several right wing autobots responded with the usual "Hell yes" or "I do NOT belong to you, Nobama" or other such bile.

Another friend, an African American, posted a response that said, "Without the government, many of us would still belong to other people. Given the choice of belonging to my master or belonging to government, I chose government."

The right wing drivel curiously stopped after that one.

Could RNC 2012 result in the smallest post-convention bounce in history...

...or could Romney actually go backwards in the polls? Has that ever happened before?

My conversation with a pro-life friend today...

If have a very close friend who is pro-life. Since he's non-doctrinaire and somewhat level-headed, I often discuss abortion issues with him to get a real point of view, not just the standard teahadist screed. For instance, he supports abortion if the life of the mother is in jeopardy and thinks that Akin's statements are ridiculous.. For some reason, we had never discussed abortion resulting from rape or incest. A couple of hours ago, I asked him about Ryan's comment that a rape-induced pregnancy is still "life" irrespective of the method of conception.

The following is a crude transcript of the conversation:

Me: So, do you agree with Ryan's belief that the fetus should still be protected if the pregnancy resulted from rape?

Friend: That's a tough one but, no, I don't feel that the government should force a woman to have her rapist's baby.

Me: Why not?

Friend: It's difficult for me, but that child would be a daily reminder - even during gestation - of a horrific attack that the victim would have to relive over and over again.

Me: Okay, I'm glad to hear that. What about after the baby is born? Would you support euthanasia of a living child that resulted from rape?

Friend: NO!! Of course not!

Me: So, what's the difference?

Friend: Because it's a human being! The baby has been born. You can't kill a living, breathing child, no matter what the reason!! Why are you even--

Me: Don't worry, I don't support euthanizing a living human either. So you draw a distinction between an embryo and a living child.

Friend: Of course.

Me: The difference is that the baby is alive, but the embryo isn't.

Friend: Yes.

Me: So, life does NOT begin at conception.

Friend: ...

Me: ...

Friend: Wow. I have some thinking to do.

It's a good thing the GOP is passing these Voter ID laws...

One in every 403,225,806 votes cast in the US since the year 2000 has been fraudulent. That got me to thinking. I wonder what crazy things are more likely than someone casting a fraudulent vote in-person. Here's what I found:

Dating a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model - 89,000:1
Getting hit by an asteroid - 200,000:1
Being killed by a vending machine - 112,000,000:1
Becoming President - 150,000,000:1
Winning the $640 Million Mega Millions lottery back in March - 176,000,000:1

Also included were being killed while 1) crossing the street (47,000:1), 2) getting struck by lightning (700,000:1), or 3) being hit by a bus (200,000:1). I couldn't find the odds of being struck by lightning while crossing the street and getting hit by a bus.

So, Chick-fil-A's beliefs are based on the bible? Fine. I disagree, but fine...

Hypocrisy, much?
