Obama spokesman responds to Franklin Graham's 'birther' remarks

WASHINGTON — White House spokesman Jay Carney fired back Monday at evangelist Franklin Graham for questioning whether President Obama was born in the U.S.

Graham, who 10 years ago delivered the opening prayer at the first inauguration of George W. Bush, told ABC's “This Week with Christiane Amanpour” Sunday that Obama “has some issues to deal with” when it comes to proving his nationality.

“He can solve this whole birth certificate issue pretty quickly,” the son of the Rev. Billy Graham said. “I was born in a hospital in Asheville, N.C., and I know that my records are there.

You can probably even go and find out what room my mother was in when I was born. I don't know why he can't produce that.”

What Obama has produced is his certificate of birth from the very American state of Hawaii. It says he was born in Honolulu on Aug. 4, 1961, at 7:24 p.m.

Various state officials of both parties have attested to its legitimacy and accuracy.

....

“I think it's unfortunate that a religious leader would choose Easter Sunday to make preposterous charges,” Carney said. “And I'll leave it at that.”

...........

ADDITIONAL REMARKS BY FRANKLIN GRAHAM

On Obama's faith:
“He has told me that he is a Christian. But the debate comes: What is a Christian? For him, going to church means he's a Christian. For me, the definition of a Christian is whether we have given our life to Christ and are following him in faith, and we have trusted him as our Lord and Savior. … God is the only one who knows his heart.”

On Donald Trump's presidential bid:
“When I first saw that he was getting in, I thought, 'Well, this has got to be a joke,'” … But the more you listen to him, the more you say to yourself, 'You know? Maybe the guy's right.'”

1. carney made a huge mistake.
He wrongly accused Franklin of being religious leader.

Unlike his dad, Franklin is a wannabe, with huge ego problems. Even worse, no one takes him seriously. The old school folks who loved his daddums, think he is an arrogant, self-promoting, idiot, proof the evolution sometimes works in reverse. The younger crew see him as a failed has been who offers nothing relevant to today's world.

In his mirror, Franklin sees himself as the anointed leader, destined to lead the entire country to a conservative christian heaven on earth. In your dreams, punk.

2. The more I listen to Franklin, the more I wish he'd keep his mouth shut.
The Bible says "judge not lest you be judged", which as a lifelong Baptist I understood to mean, don't make judgments about others' salvation. I'm not sure when Obama is supposed to have said that going to church makes one a Christian, but I clearly recall George W. waxing on about his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ--and then proceeding to act anything but Christlike. Maybe that's off point but I'm guessing if Obama were to make the same assertion about accepting the Lord, Franklin would not believe him. Just 'cause, well, you don't really get a certificate for that born again moment. Maybe it's time for Billy to have a heart to heart with his son and heir. Not that it matters, but I have absolutely no respect for Franklin. Jumping on the birther wagon? Thinking Trump's got it right? Shame on him!

Didn't mean to go off on a rant, but thanks for posting. Good response from Jay Carney, BTW.

Peace
