Racism is not at all confined to the South.
Edited on Mon Apr-11-11 11:56 PM by Brigid
The thread about GA and Stone Mountain got me thinking. I live in IN, and have a biracial nephew. He never lived here while growing up (my sister lived in WA, FL, and CA during those years). When he was about 18, for some reason my sister and her new husband, who is white, moved to the southern part of IN. He came with them so that he cold finish high school. My nephew looks white, and you would not believe some of the things that were said in front of him while he lived here. I am sure the ones who said these things would have been horrified if they had realized his heritage. No wonder he moved back to WA.

1. I've lived in liberal bastions my entire life.
And as I don't "look" Latina, have heard the most unbelievable stuff about "Latins", Mexicans, etc. my whole life, too. Silicon Valley was segregated when we moved there in the early 60s.

3. That stereotype makes me froth at the mouth
There is racism everywhere in this country, and the only reason to say it's only in the South is because you don't want to admit that you're racist.

I would like for anyone who thinks Southerners are the only racist people in the country to explain the projects and ghettos and "inner city" problems all over the nation, please. Or why government representatives in non-Southern states still tend to be white men for the most part.

Show me statistics that prove that in every single non-Southern state, there is total educational, financial, political, and social equality and then you can have your self-righteous regional bigotry. But until then, I'm going to yell at you and tell you how much of a prejudiced hypocrite you are.

4. I believe that after the civil war many confederates resettled in south Indiana
and south Illinois. I've also heard that in Pennsylania you have Philadelphia and Pittsburg with Alabama in between. Racism sadly exists everywhere racists do-certainly not just the south.

5. I seem to recall that the KKK resurgence in the 20's ...
Had it's roots in Indiana ....

I remember my Dad using the 'N' word often when I grew up near NYC .... I eventually grew old enough to demand he stop using it .... He was taken aback, but he did stop ....

He was always an asshole ..... An asshole who sometimes took us to ballgames and stuff, but then became the asshole again soon after ....

Racists are assholes .... and assholes are usually racist ...

6. Yes, IN was a huge hotbed of KKK activity back then.
When the Indiana State Museum put a KKK robe and hood on display in an exhibit about this, some protested; but the museum said that this is a fact of the state's history and it is no use trying to hide it.

Read Janis Ian's autobiography "Society's Child" to hear about what happened the night she sang that song in Encino, California. And I grew up in Salem, Oregon, a town that, in the 1940's, had THIS sign at the Greyhound depot:

"Welcome to Salem
Population 25,000
99.9% white".

Also, in 1922 Oregon elected an ally of the Ku Klux Klan as governor.

11. Yep, when I hear someone going on about how the South is racist, I tend
to believe s/he is projecting and harbors unconscious racist attitudes. Racism of all kinds can be found all over the world.

12. Racism can be seen as an extension of a basic human cognitive process: to regard anything
that is different from one's self as also flawed or wrong somehow.

13. I don't believe i've ever heard anyone seriously make that assertion and I'm
from Alabama. While racism is everywhere it is particularly deep rooted in the South and it is a virulent and often violent strain that pervades Dixie. It is much improved from when I was I growing up in 'Bloody Lowndes' County in the '60s but it still has a long way to go.

17. Indina is the "Mississippi of the North"
You should know that. When I moved from Mississippi to Indiana, crossing from Kentucky to Indiana the first Indiana license plate I saw was a Ford pickup with a rebel flag in the back window. I felt like I hadn't moved far at all...

19. My town is pretty much all white.
They were getting in some minorities from Chicago for the Section 8 housing but that didn't make things very multicultural. That "cultural exchange" seems to not have panned out. The foreign students we have in the high school are usually always from Scandinavia or Germany. Certainly not from the Cote D'Ivoire or Burkina Faso!! We do have two Chinese restaurants though and 20 years ago we had none. Our town also seems to have an unusually large number of police and sheriff's deputies. Of course it is the county seat. I could write a book about this place but someone already has!!

20. It never has been confined to the South, at any time in our history...
read Leon Litwack's North of Slavery: The Negro in the Free States, 1790-1860 (published in 1965; hence, the usage of the term "Negro" in the title).

22. That looks really good. Thanks for the recommendation.
I was talking to my mom about Jan Brewer and on a hunch, searched "Jan Bruja" where bruja = witch. Tens of thousands of hits. lol

Mom and I figured out that Governor Bruja's immigrant grandparents were probably undocumented.
