They support Medicare. They supported "Obamacare". They are another pesky organization that stands in the way of the toddlers getting what they want.

The rethugs are getting ready to 'ACORN' Aarp.

It's time to show AARP that they have support & should stand strong.

1. AARP is a privately run corp with no requirement or mechanism to be responsive to member inputs
Join them if you want, but I refuse to for that reason.

2. I will. I saw first hand what a great organization they are when my dad was nearing the end of his
life. They offered alot of services and support for Seniors.

by a long shot.

12. AARP is both the non profit AARP Foundation and the for profit AARP Services Inc.
Non Profits have elected boards... it's the Inc side of AARP that's troublesome, at least imo.

From Wikipedia:

At present, there are two affiliated organizations: the AARP Foundation which operates on a non-profit basis and AARP Services Inc. which is managed wholly for profit. The AARP Foundation runs programs on: free tax preparation and counseling, work training for older people of low income, training of volunteers on matters concerning the elderly, crime prevention and safe driving. AARP Services Inc. offers: Medicare supplemental health insurance, discounts on prescription drugs and consumer goods, entertainment and travel packages, long-term care insurance and automobile, home and life insurance.

22. If they are accepting Title V funds, than they should be following written protocol in re
how the BOD of the Non Prof side is structured, which should specifically set out rules for membership, elections, and so on.

The communities we serve (the Non Prof I work for) nominates and elects our BOD, officers, etc. I don't work for AARP, but am familiar with Title V requirements - and they are very strict regarding organizations they fund.

I don't work for AARP, so I can't answer your questions... I can only hope :)

5. AARP supported Bush's Medicare boondoggle for Big Pharma.
Edited on Mon Apr-11-11 09:47 AM by EFerrari
And in their function as insurance brokers, why wouldn't they support the health insurance bill.

but since the cost is so low to join, the benfits might be worth it. I don't really know what the benefits are though.

26. AARP jumped the shark a number of years ago
There was basically a RW coup that rendered it ineffective as an advocacy organization for us "seniors" (and "graduates," too, I suppose). Not to be harsh about it, but any ACORNing of them is likely to be complicit.

On the plus side, they do offer some travel coupons that are probably worth clipping, and a magazine with a groovy name (My Generation).

I think they also offer a credit card, but then if my mailbox is any indicator, so does everybody and his barber.
