Pond skimming' turns tragic for 3 Vt. snowmobilers

Lancaster, New Hampshire - April 4, 2011

The Connecticut River is a thin sheet of ice this time of year. Despite the danger, three Vermont snowmobilers tempted fate Sunday, skimming their machines across-- leaving only tracks behind.

"They made two to three passes at the most before they broke through the ice," said Lt. Douglas Gralenski of New Hampshire Fish and Game. "Hypothermia will come on instantaneously or within minutes which will paralyze you so that you basically can't swim to shore and self-rescue."

Adam DeBartolo, 28, of Perkinsville, Vt., did not make it out of the frigid waters.

"It's a life-threatening risk that people take and unfortunately a life was lost as a result of it," Gralenski said.

Grieving friends and family gathered on the bank, watching as a recovery team from New Hampshire Fish and Game searched for DeBartolo's body. They punch holes through the ice just wide enough for the divers to slip in. Although the divers are tethered to the airboat, the strong current makes this search difficult and dangerous.

"They're assuming a great deal of risk on behalf of trying to recover this body," Gralenski said.

<snip>

and yes, the assholes were drunk.

Did he hand his beer to a buddy and say "Watch this?"
Is Darwin aware of this, you know for contention for the yearly award?

5. believe it or not, this happens fairly regularly
I freakin' hate snow machines. I live right by a trail and all winter long the drunken yobs are out buzzing around late at night.

6. And to think that some people don't believe in human evolution...
...when there are examples of the process of natural selection like this taking place every day.

7. And it's all over the place...
It happened in my area a week or two ago...

Some guys were doing some maintenance work at a major car dealership when a huge explosion happened, killing one worker.

Turned out the explosion happened when one of the guys opened a large barrel that had previously contained very flammable liquid of some kind.

He wasn't sure whether or not it was empty, so he pried up the top and stuck a cigarette lighter inside to see.

The explosion was so powerful the lid was blown through the garage ceiling.

One of my neighbors does some varied contracting work and was absolutely sick thinking it might have been one of his guys, who happened to be there that day.

Hmmm...barrel. Probably clearly marked "flammable". Not sure it's empty, so let's peek inside with an open flame.

sigh....
