We Are One - The Fight is Just Starting (Labor Rally in PA.) Wow! - pics

Leaders from unions representing steelworkers, farmers, teachers, and maritime workers and others join with mine worker leaders in a march along Route 21 to the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg, Pa. for a labor rally on Friday, April 1, 2011.

Members of the United Mine Wokers of America march along State Route 21 to the Greene County Fairgrounds in Waynesburg, Pa. , for a labor rally Friday, April 1, 2011. Thousands of union coal miners and supporters from several states tried to spark an uprising in southwestern Pennsylvania on Friday, proclaiming themselves ready to mobilize for the war they say is being waged on organized labor in the United States.

1. In the first photo they look quite happy
So opposite from the foaming at the mouth, raging Tea Bag Partiers.

Refreshing.

6. They're happy
because they're optimistic and they know that the people are behind them and they can win this battle.

Tea partiers seem to be largely driven by hate and fear.

13. That is a very profound observation.

It's so much effective (and thus rewarding and inspiring) to clearly and knowingly stand FOR something, rather than only fighting against.

Some don't see the difference, but I feel it's huge.

17. It begs the question. Why are they happy? You'd think they were on the verge of getting loads of new
additional rights, not the other way around.

19. Because they know each other now and they have a great cause and
They can feel the power of the people, them.

I was very happy when I marched in the anti-war demonstrations after 9/11. It gave me great hope and relief to see so many people believing the same thing.

It's not hard to fathom.

23. I wouldn't be so happy. I'd be protesting, not rallying. I don't understand the laughs & good cheer
over losing your rights.
I'd be mad as hell.
Almost as mad as I am watching a bunch of helpless democrats and peaceful workers getting their rights jacked without an ounce of resistance.

21. For those who don't know - Greene county is very rural
Edited on Fri Apr-01-11 05:46 PM by RamboLiberal
Sits on the border with West Virginia. Coal mining country. Bit of an impoverished county, though I expect the Marcellus Shale drillers will make some landowners wealthy. McCain had a very narrow tenths of a percentage point win in '08. Some probably voted on guns/religious issues for McCain.

Go miners! Love those pics. Wake up the working people of this country Repukes.

Thousands of members of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) came to Green County, Pennsylvania for a rally to fight for a new and fair nationwide coal contract for both active and retired miners.

The rally started with a 1.5 mile march, then the rally took place at the Green County Fairgrounds and then there was a family picnic for all of the UMWA members in attendance. The rally had miners from West Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and many other states.

UMWA President Cecil Roberts was one of the many people who spoke at the rally. Other speakers at the rally included UMWA International Secretary-Treasurer Daniel Kane and Secretary-Treasurer and Wisconsin State AFL-CIO Stephanie Greenberg. You can watch Roberts' complete speech below,

58. I do not share your optimism...
Until I start seeing the dupes for the "social culture wars" start voting FOR their economic interests and working for changes on their pet issues outside of the Republican shell game they've been falling for over the last 35 years, I just can't make the leap of faith that real change is imminent.

The bottom line is that there are still waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more people who vote for the thugs against their own economic interests (and FOR the economic interest of the upper 0.01% of the country) solely based on false promises and fake claims of pols who love them some Jeebus every other September and October but forget all about him the rest of the time.

62. I might normally agree but...
although the M$M refuses to cover all of this, I think word has *finally* gotten out and is finally getting through to all these repukes who belong to unions and consistently supported the GrOPers. IMHO, the crazies in other states have overtly played their hands with much press and fanfare, which is why the repuke governor here has laid low (in terms of flamboyancy), being this state is strongly union from across many industries and government services.

Sad thing is - we have to suffer through another 2 years of a nightmare before we can halt the scorched earth policy that is happening at the moment.

59. A Pro-active rally is nice!
Most rallies and protests have been rective in nature to assholes in office taking rights away. This was more of a Pro-active rally which is beautiful to see. The Fascists have sparked the fight...hope they are ready.

60. It would have been so awesome if Obama were there to meet them!

He would have been a hero, sort of.

61. K&R from the other side of the state!
Good to see our western PA folks rising up because they are who the teabaggers and other lunatic fringe RWers have always aimed to recruit. Repukes just edged out a win in this county for Governor and Senator. Thankfully they have a Dem in congress.

67. Remember Solidarity among the working class is a nail
in the coffin of the Koch Cabal and the RightWing divisive tactics.

Watch Faux continue the meme about Union thugs etc.

"United we Stand divided we Fall"!! Live it and breath it!

We will not win this all out assault on the working in the country unless we understand that the Republicans and the Koch cabal are in it to have Kings and Queens in this country and the rest of the citizenery as slaves. We need to stop falling for their divisive tactics.....

75. The teabaggers may have started something that they aren't going to like very much.

It's an example of why you have to negotiate with other people and can't just go out and do whatever you want.
