Is Child Labor Back in Missouri?
Is Child Labor Back in Missouri?

Senator Jane Cunningham's proposal to roll back Child Labor Laws in Missouri was widely mocked, both in Missouri and nationally. But after Cunningham dropped her bill under pressure from just about everybody, it seemed like Missouri Republicans had decided to pursue their quest to crush working families using other despicable methods.

Not so fast, though. It turns out the new budget just passed out of the Missouri House actually eliminates all of the people who investigate child labor and minimum wage complaints, effectively defunding any enforcement of the laws.

KMOV has the story:

3. It's the homeschoolers
They are a powerful lobby in MO and there is a state senator who caters to them. They want child labor laws abolished so their kids can go to work.

5. They're not getting much homeschooling if they're out working.
That seems like a very obvious way to fail.

8. They are in the state capitol nearly every day.
I go up several times a year to lobby and they are always there when I am. And state reps I know tell me the homeschoolers are there more often than any other lobby.

It's actually hard to miss them. The kids run wild while Mom lobbies. We were stuck in an elevator one time when the kids were playing with the buttons on another floor.

6. well, little fingers are nimble, but what factories
are left to make them little slaves in? I guess they could be farm workers, but they don't hold out well on hard physical labor unless they've gotten to the age of 14 or 15...they should be paid a LOT less too, since they don't have families to take care of.
Dripping :sarcasm:

7. Oh, not to worry -- there won't be any jobs available, anyway.
