:loveya: I think I'm more of a decimal point kind of gal - 33.333% and that's only because of the hours I spent outside the Woolworths with my clipboard, telling the good news about DU. I was sweet on the soda jerk, who would always put an extrey shot of cherry in my coke and complimented the ribbons in my hair so he helped the time pass nicely.

120. Well, I was cutting down this tree when it started to rain . . .
It was 2003, I saw a flash video that Symbolman had made and it made me cry.
It was about the soldiers that had been sent to Iraq and how the Bush administration had failed to give them the proper equipment, and were trying to cut the VA budget, and on and on.

And I thought to myself, "how could the American people vote for a retarded, slurring retarded asswipe like Bush over someone like Al Gore?"

Then I saw a link that Symbolman put up to the DU forum, and now I'm addicted.

In a very ugly incident Mike Malloy was fired from AirAmerica Radio. Another AAR host, Sam Seder, directed his listeners to the "Bring Back Malloy" petition that was on DU. I had never heard of DU but once I got here (in the raucous atmosphere of the 2006 election) I was hooked.

I can't remember whether I found your web page before or after I found DU, but I do remember going there and reading your essays.

As I said elsewhere on this thread, I came to DU by way of Delphi forums. I suspect I found a link to your web page from Delphi as well, I remember it as a separate event from finding DU.

I know that I liked what you wrote way back then. :)

39. DU saved my sanity
I clicked in from Buzzflash. No one will ever know how I felt after Bush was elected. I stumbled in on a link from Buzzflash. I also remember enjoying someone named Gloria (I think) on Buzzflash who would give us a rundown on the Chris Matthews show, which I could not stand to watch. I remember the "I'm Sorry America" input we had from all over the world. Still, every day I check in to DU. I don't do much interaction, as you can probably tell from the number of times I have written. Usually I respond to animal stuff. You guys are way smarter and knowledgeable than I am. Each day I learn something new, so I will be here forever. Oh, and I remember when the "Breaking News" forum started. In the early days it was so good. Because DU saved my sanity I donate every quarter. It's the least I can do.

83. You know, I know that number in our profile reflects ...
registration order, but in terms of actual numbers... There certainly would not have been 103,000 plus registrations by May, 2001. So are the first two digits just place holders and yours and my number really reflects 3,900 or so? Do you know? By the way, Will Pitt was just a few ahead of us both (102,890) and he says he remembers registering May 21, 2001... So we had to be just a few days or a week or so after that...

Subtract 10,000 from the number that shows up and you have your member number.

If you activate your profile, it will show the exact date you registered.

121. I'm member #6679. I'm not Skinner. I registered in late summer or early fall of 2001.
I found my here via an old conglomerate discussion site called Delphi Forums. One of the Delphi political forums posted the Top 10 Conservative Idiots every week. I followed the link and started lurking for a few months.

Eventually I wanted to say something so I registered. I just can't remember whether it was before or after 9/11.

189. Wow! You're the only person I've ever come across on DU who knows about the old Delphi forums!
I had my own Delphi forum in those days, it was called "Indian Country (something)". Back then I was intensely involved in American Indian treaty issues and cultural preservation and such.

I'm not, myself, an American Indian, but I was living with an Ojibwe tribal historian and we collaborated on advocacy and political activism around all kinds of Native political and cultural issues. I worked as a sort of bridge between our two cultures and mindsets.

He died of a sudden massive heart attack 3 days before the 2000 election. It took years for me to recover from the loss.

Somewhere in that muddled time of grieving I made my way to DU and found a place where I could set aside my personal pain and commiserate with the larger pain of all the shocked and depressed DUers who were gathering here to mourn the stolen election.

I think I got here via Democrats.com, or Buzzflash.com. I used to think it was right after shrub's swearing in, but my I.D. number is 3021, so I'm guessing that is around spring of 2001.

138. I ruined my feet and knees January 2003 marching in Washington...
... and out of exhaustion, started lurking the sites mentioned by Mike Malloy, I'm pretty sure. I lurked for a while, but joined the end of 2004 when I thought I'd lost my mind through that election.

I stayed in GD for quite a while and still haven't realized the full potential of the place.

back then I would tape Malloy and sometimes found myself laughing out loud in public as I listen to the tapes,of his show at night then the games began and they got rid of Mike and I followed him all over the net,he was the best at expressing my anger about Bush/Cheney.

I use to crack up at Kathy singing "Its about oil"

182. The funny thing about Malloy ....
He's right about a lot of stuff and he is STILL right about it,

He's a surviver in a business that would otherwise be dead via AM radio.

There is no more AM radio. And due to so called legislations, not much to hope for net neutrality.

I'll stick with Malloy as a subscriber (he says he wouldn't be surprised if his show no longer existed, due to this legislation).

I'll also stick with DU.

And its says 2008. I remember coming here in 2002 and reading all the time, but I wasn't ready to commit, as I had been thrown off another political website.. Democrats.com. I don't even remember the offense, other then it went against their grain. So I came here and read the comments and watched the videos, and the news. It took me till 2008, I guess to finally sign on. Happy to be here!

Everybody after that can find their registration date in their profile.

I figured out those earlier member numbers and dates through a rather laborious process by which I wasted several hours one night in late 2008 when I had nothing better to do.

147. I found DU in a round about way.
My employer, a subsidiary of Health Net briefly had Free Republic as our office's home page. I started reading posts there, kept reading DU and with in about an hour I did a search for DU and was home. this all occurred in one day in 2001.

I've been here under 2 different names since then. Something weird happened with my home computer and wiped out my first ID. I managed to forget my password by the time I got anew computer and ISP so I registered as Mulsh and have been here ever since. It took me forever to make 1000 posts. I've seen lots of people come and go and survived all sorts of internal battles mostly watching from the sidelines.
I've stayed all these years because I enjoy this place and always learn something here.

...that. I was all like "I am about ready to shoot myself with all these fucking polls that are coming out showing how much America loves Bush."

And so, in a fit of pique to respond to something I'd read (probably some news story Keph posted) I came up with the only handle my addled mind would quickly dispense: Poll-Blind. Because fuck all those polls, Bush is a dimwit asshole!.

It was back in 2001, before September 11th, but honestly I can't recall exactly when I made my login because up to that point I had wisely only lurked in any sort of political discussion forums, falsely thinking I would pour unusual quantities of time into them if I did!

Man, getting a little maudlin about Keph. I learned that September 11th was going on from Keph. Not from CNN or NBC or any of those places. The cable channel I was watching had just cut from an episode of Little House on the Prarie to a big puff of billowing smoke and I had no idea what was going on. I actually thought it was some mistake, that it was from a movie they'd switched to inadvertently. No voiceover or anything. I dropped into DU and saw Keph's thread. This has gotta be a joke I thought as I went to CNN...but CNN wouldn't load up. In fact, none of the big places I checked for news would load up. And then I realized why I couldn't get to any of those web pages: Because Keph wasn't bullshitting. I remember going as white as a sheet when the realization hit me.

And even though he's sadly gone, that is still one of the biggest draws about DU for me: Before breaking news hits the air, people have already started fighting about what it means on DU. Since I've been barred by the UN from running my own intelligence service, DU is about the closest anyone can get to having their own.

PB

An internet search on election betting odds led to a DU thread with ridiculous quoted numbers. They were a pundit's guess with no basis in reality.

I looked at that thread for more than a day, certain someone would jump in and laugh at the absurd claims. When no one did, I joined and pointed out the true odds on the races mentioned, plus other races.

177. early 2008 - during the primaries
I can't remember how I got here, but I had been reading every alternative news source I could find since 2001. I no longer believed a word the media wrote or said. As we lived in Seattle at the time, I could find and listen to such alternative sources. Then I moved to Colorado by myself (while hubby was still back in Seattle in school) and was desperate to find like-minded people. Somehow I ended up here and couldn't believe all the years I had missed. Though I don't post that much, I am on DU at least 1-2 hours a day. I just wish I had known sooner -- I mightn't have felt so isolated for so long...
