Why does the world care so much about Libya, but completely ignored Darfur?
A point I thought should be discussed.

5. Maybe Kaddafi's high profile and Pan Am flight 103?
I think Kaddafi is believed to be a sponsor of global terrorism, who may have been on a brief hiatus for political purposes, but in any case is not just scum, but scum actually dangerous to the generally lighter-skinned regions.

It's just a theory. I'm open-minded as to other reasons.

And I think oil may be a factor but not in the sense of an overt power grab to control the oil, just a sense that if we have an opportunity for a better relationship with the owners, that wouldn't be a bad thing.

6. Could it be, Darfur left a feeling of guilt, and so they cannot let
it happen again. Also through the years we have
encouraged the people in these countries to rise
up against the Despots. To encourage them and then
not assist them when they are in need????

9. If that were true...
we'd be helping those rebelling in Bahrain and Yemen too.

7. Lack of oil and an easily identifiable boogeyman
Everyone knows you have to have a strong boogeyman to rally people against. With Libya, it's easy, since Gaddafi has a history of doing bad things.

10. A few other things too
Libya has

1) a centralized military
2) air power, which can be effectively neutralized without boots on the ground
3) close sea access via aircraft carrier

stop its oppression in Dafur?

15. Well you could look at this either of two ways
We didn't really care... resources and all that... cynical yes.

We learned our lessons.

The truth is somewhere in between these two... I lean closer to number one.

Never mind than from a humanitarian law you could make a case here.

If we "learned our lesson" from Darfur, then why aren't we doing a damned thing about Burma
Don't really hear a peep about Burma these days

17. Because Libya is really close to southern Europe
While not quite as close as Tunisia, Libya is still very near Greece and Italy. Most of us in the US little understand geography and resulting trade and travel patterns.

18. Because the folks don't have that pale skin color?
The real question is, why have the great powers not intervened in the conflicts throughout the rest of Africa that have killed millions of BLACK people.
