Public radio listeners in Iowa and Nebraska could lose some of their favorite programs if an effort to take away federal funding for NPR is successful.

House Republicans are pushing a bill this week that would cut taxpayer support for National Public Radio amid criticism from some that the radio network is a liberal bastion that does not need or deserve federal dollars.

“We should not be using tax dollars to fund a political agenda,” said Iowa Rep. Steve King, a Republican.

Nebraska Rep. Lee Terry said he would support the measure. The Republican said that with the nation's rising deficit, every program should be questioned for its necessity.

“We have to ask the question, is this a federal government duty? It is not. And therefore, we should cut it,” Terry said.

1. There is a vacuum of a political agenda. NPR is independent.
It can't be dictated to by officeholders and/or commercial sponsors (and thereby indirectly by commercial boycotts).
