Dalai Lama formally resigns
Dalai Lama formally resigns

DHARAMSALA, India, March 14 (UPI) -- The Dalai Lama Monday formally submitted his resignation as Tibets' political leader to the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile in Dharamsala, India.

Tibetan Parliament Speaker Penpa Tsering read the letter in which Tenzing Gyatso, who is regarded as the 14th incarnation of the Dalai Lama, asked the lawmakers to officially relieve him of his political responsibility, the Hindustan Times reported.

"I want to acknowledge here that many of my fellow Tibetans, inside and outside Tibet, have earnestly requested me to continue to give political leadership at this critical time," the 75-year-old Dalai Lama wrote.

"My intention to devolve political authority derives neither from a wish to shirk responsibility nor because I am disheartened."

1. Contrast this with the dictator's trying to hold onto power
In giving up power the Dalai Lama, age and health permitting, will be around and have the voice and influence he has today if not more long after Momo and the other dictator's trying to hold onto power against the wishes of the people. Even if they last longer they wont have the influence in the world that the Dali Lama will have while he's around.

At least that's my bet.

2. Only a man who never sought or wanted political power would surrender it.
Would that *our* politicians were so self-effacing, and dare I say, honest...
