2. Where can I look for that kind of information?
I have tried searching a few different sources including the NYT, Google News and Science daily. Teach a man to fish, will ya? :)

3. The USGS has info on quakes
as well as handy maps of them as they happen.

But generally speaking they will have quakes, some of them strong, for a few months as part of the cluster.

They already have had a few large ones as well, 7 and above... as days go by the intensity will go down.

7. Thanks, I poked around a bit on their site but am still coming up short with predictions.
Is it just too hard to make specific ones? Do we just go with a general sense of it'll take a few weeks or possibly months to settle down?

I did find a predictions page on that site, but it didn't seem to have much information. Can you recommend some other resource, perhaps a bit more accessible by laypeople?

8. We are not at the point of making an ACTUAL prediction
of when a quakke will come or how... just that these things come in clusters.

On the bright side, they actually had a two minute warning in Tokyo before this one hit... which is a FIRST.

5. There is no "science" to earthquake prediction
Aftershocks are common, for months or years for the big ones.

The earth moves and we little creatures run away.

11. years- we had them for years after the Northridge quake
and this one was 3000 times stronger. I feel so bad for these people. Many of these aftershocks are stronger than even most big earthquakes.

4. Nadin is correct --
they will have 24/7 aftershocks for weeks, even months afterwards. After Loma Prieta we had noticable ones for several weeks. They can be just as scary as the original quakes. Buildings that survived the first quake but were damaged can come down in the aftershocks. Plus they are emotionally draining and leave you on edge..

6. Aftershocks?
There was another earthquake about 40 minutes ago in Western Japan - above 6.

And yes aftershocks will continue in the North east for some time - don't know anything about predicting earthquakes.

9. No way to truly predict yet --
other than the general historical predictions -- like the San Andreas is due for a blow every 100-150 years or so. Earthquakes are on you before you know it. Fun when they are a 5. and under, scary when you start rockin' the 6s.

10. LOL!
I ask all DU'ers to consider the following:

What is sometimes found behind a "mirror wall"?

Does it make sense that a person with the skill and intelligence to find their way to DU and post this question could not just as easily have gone to Google or some other search engine?

Why does this poster consistently ask such simple questions claiming to be unable to find any information about the subject in question? (there are over four million hits on Google for the word "aftershocks")

Do you think rats in a maze know they are part of an expirement?

Cheers!

14. Seems like the huge quake is also unravelling some of the other faults
A look at the map of aftershocks has a wide area just vibrating like a bell afterwards... lots of quakes in a widespread area.

18. The same sort of thing was measured with the Indonesian quake that caused the massive Tsunami
The bigger the quake, the more pressure also gets released along the smaller fault-lines.

15. Just had a 6.6 near the west coast of Honshu, Japan,
according to the nifty little app I have on this computer.

As others have pointed out, the aftershocks continue for a long time. I think there's a technical definition of what makes an aftershock compared to what constitutes a separate earthquake in the same area. My guess is that different fault zones are involved.

16. Now a 6.3 near the east coast of Honshu, Japan.
The aftershocks are going to be constant and on-going for quite some time.

After the Haiti quake I saw many, many aftershocks on the computer.
