7. these are hopeful times.
repukes are pushing things towards a cliff.....maybe soon we'll fight back and clear out this corrupt system. People will only get so tired of suffering the billionaires. (see also: Let them eat cake)

Uprising in the Middle East...People are growing tired of dictators and are DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Regardless of whether they stand out in a city square for a week or two, or if their government attacks and bombs them in the streets.

When things get bad enough, change happens. People will fight back when they get pushed too far. Maybe we'll finally get pushed far enough to get people off the sofas and into the streets.

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN A WHILE, I SEE A RAY OF HOPE. I SEE A SENSE OF COMMUNITY. OK caps lock undone.
All around the world, people are rising up making their voices heard. Many are dying but death is better than a life of suppression.

I've resigned myself to the fact that some of us might die as our momentum grows in the US and if I'm one of them, so be it but I WILL NOT GO DOWN QUIETLY.

17. Really?
Despite my overwhelming concern for my daughter-in-laws family in Japan, I prefer to look at the beauty of life.

My son. An amazing man, wonderful husband and perfect son.
My husband. The only one that can tolerate me on a long-term basis.
My crappy job. Underpaid, overworked and irritating clients. But, I have a job and a great boss.
My critters. A deaf and stupid dog and four annoying cats. All keep me sane.
My friends. The ones that refuse to let me stay depressed for long.
My new Mozart CD that replaces the one my son stole.
A beautiful day in Arizona regardless of the politics.
My sister. Who is freaking out along with me about my d-i-laws family.
The internet. Where I meet new people each day, some of whom don't drive me insane.

Most of all...hope.
Hope for the people of Japan that they will recover quickly. Incredibly strong people.
Hope for the citizens in the ME. That they will overcome tyrrany and welcome democracy and peace.
Hope that Kadhafi is destroyed along with his sons.
Hope for the economy so that my unemployed friends, both real and virtual, can find jobs.

Yes, there are things in my life that depress me. It's Friday. I don't need to dwell on them. They will all pass one way or another. So, do yourselves a favor, go listen to some good (uplifting) music, laugh with some friends and hug a family member.

You can make the day shine.

Be greatful for the lowly paid jobs while gas price and food prices are skyrocketing out
of control. No health care for families that are underpaid, Arizona passing the suppression
of minority bill, Wisconsin taking away collective bargaining rights from workers, I don't know
but there are people out there who are not so lucky as you.

Any news on Iraq? Seems odd that media is focused on Libya when the entire region is seeing protests.

But yeah depressing times indeed. Well prolly add many more to the unemployment lines too if the federal budget nonsense goes the way house republicans hope too.

24. How people are not changing their lifestyles to avoid global warming.
People all care, but almost none are actually doing (that is actually "not doing) things to avoid it. It's all about personal responsibility. Yet almost everyone will argue against that because it threatens ones ability to do most of what they like doing. Like traveling. Having children. Driving and shopping.

It's a big deal. Bigger than any other issue.

37. Actually people are passively adapting and changing..
Try to buy a car today without a catalytic converter, for instance. That wont stop some people from buying SUV's, and it's far from perfect, but it's still better than nothing.

Thanks to government regulation cars are significantly cleaner today than they were in the 70's. It has been 20 years since I've heard anyone complain about required catalytic converters.

40. Peanuts.
Edited on Fri Mar-11-11 04:00 PM by Gregorian
I remember Los Angeles in 1960. You couldn't see the signs on the highway from a 1/4 mile away. That is still puny in comparison to the difference I'm trying to convey.

I'm tired of explaining it. I find it difficult to explain. In a nutshell, we need a magnitude change, not even what appear as significant improvements in efficiency. That translates to changes made that exclude technological ones. Just ingesting a tiny amount of nuclear material isn't an answer. An answer is not ingesting any nuclear material. A car is still a car. It doesn't matter how efficient it is, essentially. In fact, if we improved our mileage by 100%, and then created 1 billion new cars (which is happening now) we will have accomplished nothing, with respect to the planet.

The answer is "not doing". The answer is counter to everything we stand for. And as such, I'm wasting my time even typing since it's not going to happen.

I forgot one important point. If each person breaks the habit, and avoids every other trip in a car, they have already effectively improved their mileage by 100%. This is how we make the big changes. By curbing our use.

we've used them like garbage dumps for centuries. Now we're causing dead zones and bleaching coral reefs and driving the biggest predators to extinction and building an enormous island of trash in the Pacific. Add to this mountaintop removal and deforestation and factory farming and the fact that billions of people don't have water and 40,000 starve to DEATH each day while we drive around enjoying our delicious tacos and talking about Charlie Sheen.. Now start to imagine my shame in Humanity.

31. All the more reason to be reminded of THIS...
ALDONZA: Why do you do these things?
DON QUIXOTE
What things?

ALDONZA
These ridiculous... the things you do!

DON QUIXOTE
I hope to add some measure of grace to the world.

ALDONZA
The world's a dung heap and we are maggots that crawl on it!

DON QUIXOTE
My Lady knows better in her heart.

ALDONZA
What's in my heart will get me halfway to hell.
And you, Señor Don Quixote-you're going to take
such a beating!

DON QUIXOTE
Whether I win or lose does not matter.

ALDONZA
What does?

DON QUIXOTE
Only that I follow the quest.

ALDONZA
(spits)
That for your Quest!
(turns, marches away; stops, turns bock
and asks, awkwardly)
What does that mean... quest?

DON QUIXOTE
It is the mission of each true knight...
His duty... nay, his privilege!
To dream the impossible dream,
To fight the unbeatable foe,
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go;
To right the unrightable wrong.

To love, pure and chaste, from afar,
To try, when your arms are too weary,
To reach the unreachable star!

This is my Quest to follow that star,
No matter how hopeless, no matter how far,
To fight for the right
Without question or pause,
To be willing to march into hell
For a heavenly cause!

And I know, if I'll only be true
To this glorious Quest,
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest.

And the world will be better for this,
That one man, scorned and covered with scars,
Still strove, with his last ounce of courage,
To reach the unreachable stars!

Take a break for yourself for awile -- Trust me, the world's issues will still be here and you can worry about them then...:hi:

36. As Bad As It Is, This Is Nothing Compared to the 1930s. NOTHING.
In the 30s, we were in a much more severe economic depression. The Nazis had taken over Germany and began invading other European countries. WWII was inevitable.

In America, Jim Crow laws ruled the South, and the nation was segregated according to race.

Women had no rights whatsoever. Workers had very little rights.

I could go on and on, but today is nothing compared to the 1930s.

Our problem is because too many of us love to feel sorry for ourselves instead of taking action. We want Obama to solve all of our problems like he's some kind of superhero. Waiting for any politician to solve our problems is a huge, massive mistake.

Nah, today aint nothing like the 1930s.

39. Just a little something (warnning: positive message)

Answers never clear again
This turning of the page
This turning look away

There I took a left turn
Before I came of age
I agreed to let it out
I agreed to let it go
I agreed to turn around
I agreed to turn my face away

Danger is the most important
Fear you'll ever know
The transporting of refugees
The silent night is cold

And all the time
We looked around
As we were never told

But we agreed to let it out
We agreed to let it go
We agreed to turn our backs
We agreed to turn our face away, away

Thousands to the million
Sisters, grandmothers and more
It's not the feast we throw away
It's the way we close the door

Their silence deafens every sound
We try just to ignore
To waste their future freedom
We'll regret forever more

I believe in
I believe in
These are the days that we will talk about
I believe in
I believe in
One understanding what is real

If we are one
Then we are refugees
We are the prisoners of our own design
If we are one
Seen through the eyes of a child
We will perpetuate this song of love
If we are one
Seen through the eyes of a child
We will perpetuate this song of love
If we are one
Seen through the eyes of a child
We will perpetuate this song
Perpetuate this song of love

Now we build the bridges
That we walk upon together
At the last count many lonely souls
The sadness always kills

Each breaking point is waiting
For the promise to fulfill

When we agree to turn the page
When we agree to help them free
When we agree to let it out
When we agree to let it shine
When we agree to let it run
When we agree to let it change our lives

I believe in, our lives
I believe in, our lives
These are the days we will talk about

When we are one
Seen through the eyes of child
We will perpetuate this song of love

When we are one
Seen through the eyes of child
We will perpetuate this song of love
Song of love

Yes (2001)
