NPR executive slams tea party on hidden camera

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The latest round of conservative attacks on public broadcasting got fresh ammunition with the release of a hidden-camera video of an NPR executive calling the tea party racist and saying the network would be better off without federal money anyway.

The video was posted Tuesday by James O'Keefe, the same activist whose undercover videos have targeted other groups opposed by conservatives, like the community organizing group ACORN and Planned Parenthood.

It drew swift reaction from Republicans in Congress, who are renewing efforts to cut funding to public broadcasters. NPR and PBS have long been targets of conservatives who claim their programming has a left-wing bias. Similar efforts in the 1990s and 2005 were not successful, although public broadcasters take the threat seriously.

National Public Radio said in a statement that it was "appalled" by the comments from Ron Schiller, the president of NPR's fundraising arm and a senior vice president for development. (snip)

1. I just saw this story -- on CNN no less,
and asked the same question. This guy was completely discredited BY THEM and yet they're running a story where he's pulled off another "sting."

The statements made by Ron Schiller were RIGHT ON. There was nothing incorrect about his statements. The president (VP?) of NPR (little sellout) was drooling all over herself trying to apologize on behalf of NPR.

6. i still think it's amazing that someone who's been exposed as a fraud continues
to be able to run the same scam & the media laps it up as if the exposure never occurred.

to me it seems orwellian & surreal.

17. You are missing the agenda here
Without NPR and PBS (or what is left of them), there is less competition for better programming. M$M can go ahead put their crap shows with crap advertisements and call it good. It is matter of putting entertainment out on the cheap.

BTW, I am not a big fan of TV since 1976 and having to admit the truth, I am finding TV more of a bore today!

11. Time to give O'Keefe a taste of his own medicine.
He has a history of supporting white supremacist causes. It shouldn't be that difficult to give the scumbag enough rope to hang himself.

13. NPR's Scared Shit...
I expect the executives to waffle and hem and clutch pearls and denounce and tap dance...similar to how they mishandled the Juan Williams mess.

While I'm a strong supporter of NPR it's upper brass are political appointees who will jump 10 feet high anytime the word "Congress" is mentioned.

I have no doubt that O'Queef was encouraged to do this hatchet job and shame on the corporate media who give this shitstain any mention at all. Kudos to MSNBC (so far) for not biting, but I did see it on a local newscast.

In the end, if NPR is "defunded" it'll be their own ham-handed ways of handling things that will be their undoing.

14. The most shocking thing about this is that the NPR guy's opinion is being taken
as heretic. Yes, it might show that he's not objective, but that opinion is truthful.

I laughed, but it was being discussed.

18. I'm thinking a nervous laugh no doubt
I'd bet anyway. Now a days the media can seem to make anyone be anything they set out for them to be. Oh! Us who know better aren't fooled but as the numbers of faux noise watchers is a testament too there are many who eat this kind of shit up. An up and coming Michael Moore  is a stretch though I agree.
