Saudi Arabia drafts in up to 10,000 troops ahead of protests
Saudi Arabia is drafting in up to 10,000 security forces to the north eastern Muslim Shia provinces ahead of mass protests planned next week.

Saudi Shias staged protests in two towns in Saudi Arabia's oil-producing Eastern Province on Thursday

12:37AM GMT 05 Mar 2011

...

King Abdullah is also reported to have told neighbouring Bahrain that if they do not put down their own ongoing Shia revolt, his own forces will.

In response to the massive mobilisation, protesters are planning to place women on the front ranks to discourage Saudi forces from firing on them.

In Yemen, President Ali Abdullah Saleh set off a deadly battle for survival last night as he rejected an opposition peace proposal and ordered troops to fire on demonstrators, killing four. Efforts to suppress demonstrations by the key ally in the “war on terror” could jeopardise rising volumes of Western aid flooding into the country, diplomats warned.

President Saleh rejected an opposition proposal that would have brought demonstrations to a standstill in return for a promise to step down by the end of the year. Yemeni troops used rockets and machineguns to attack demonstrators in the north of the country, killing four and injuring nine.

Gaddafi's forces attacked the city of Zawiyah from all entrances on Friday 4-3-2011, using tanks, RPG's, anti-tank guns & other heavy weaponry. Children were among the dead and ambulances were shot at too & weren't allowed to collect the bodies.

Gaddafi forces mount fierce counterattack

...

Yet if anything, the events Friday underscored Gaddafi's ability to press defiantly ahead with a brutal campaign to reclaim land lost to the rebels and squelch dissent within bastions of government control. The government appeared to be trying to secure a buffer zone around Tripoli and target areas vital to the country's oil industry, taking aim at cities and ports that have given the rebels a foothold close to the capital.

The White House expressed renewed alarm, saying that President Obama is "appalled by the use of force against unarmed, peaceful civilians." Obama is being briefed on Libya three times a day, and "we're not taking any options off the table," said Jay Carney, the White House press secretary.

Frantic call now:

"There is heavy bombing of the city by tanks and heavy weapons and mortars - the rebels are struggling to resist with very primitive means. They have no mercy and are very brutal. There is a large number of injured and a lot of people killed on the streets.

There is no mercy to civilians. The tanks belonging to to the regime are attacking everything indiscriminately and we have no means of defending ourselves.

There is a very tragic situation happening right now. It's a very serious situation. We were expecting the world to intervene, but they have let us down. Shelling is now coming in from all sides.

They are shooting at the Libyan citizens and we have made up our mid that we will die here. I am really sorry, we are in the middle of a battle and the shelling is very heavy - the could break at any moment.

We have taken prisoners out of two vehicles, and we are treating them with respect. But they are shelling us, they are kiling us.

Where is the United Nations or the Arab League or the international community who have spoken about our rights or protecting us? I don't think they meant what they have said.

I am in the middle of Martyrs' Square, and we are conducting a battle. The tanks have surrounded us and they are shelling all the buildings - whether they are residential or business properties. The shelling and destruction is indiscriminate and the civilians are taking shelter in the buildings surrouding the square - but they have not given up yet.

All parts of society - all parts - whether they are professionals and farmers - are all together, supporting each other, hoping that they will be able to survive.

But it is violent, it is indiscriminate - and the number of dead and injured? I cannot count it yet. We need the world here, we need them to intervene - words are not enough. It's not a matter of oil and gas that you need you of our country - it is human lives and blood being shed - right now."

9:45am

Gaddafi forces are shelling the town of Az Zawiyah, 40km west of Tripoli, from tanks and the sea
, eyewitnesses tell Al Jazeera. One resident tells us:

"With all the artillery, tanks and armoured vehicles, fierce fighting is ongoing and people are being massacred in a way that we haven't seen - even in Iraq.

I consider it a total genocide."

9:42am

Hospital medics tell Al Jazeera that those injured in the streets of Az Zawiyah are being executed in front of their eyes.

Ambulances are being attacked and doctors threatened with death, we are told.

29. South American, Caribbean nations offer plan

Chavez on Thursday night said he had spoken directly to Gadhafi. The Venezuela/ALBA proposal does not seem to be getting much attention from the MSM here in the United States.

-----------------

VENEZUELA SAYS LIBYA OKs CHAVEZ MEDIATION PLAN

– Fri Mar 4, 9:49 pm ET
CARACAS, Venezuela – Moammar Gadhafi's government has authorized Venezuela to select countries for an effort to mediate an end to Libya's crisis and to coordinate the effort, Venezuela's foreign minister said Friday.

Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro said he received a message from his Libyan counterpart authorizing Venezuela to "take all measures necessary to select the members and coordinate their participation in that dialogue."

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who calls Gadhafi a friend and ally, has proposed creating a group of "friendly countries" to help mediate in the conflict. Gadhafi's opponents in Libya, however, have shown no willingness to negotiate as long as he remains in power.

Countries including the U.S. and Italy also have been cool to Chavez's proposal.

The idea won support Friday from the foreign ministers of Cuba, Ecuador and Bolivia as well as from other officials representing Nicaragua, Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines. They joined Maduro in Caracas for a meeting of nations belonging to the Venezuela-led Bolivarian Alternative bloc, or ALBA.

and revolutionary organizers in the Arab world.

Screw those who prefer to play the MIC's game and turn Libya into another Iraq or Albania/Kosovo because they have an ax to grind against ppl who rightfully criticize this despicable political system for profit that thrives on war, exploitation and subservience to subsidize a way of life that can't continue. It's falling apart in front of our very eyes and ppl are still in denial thinking the same old dumb shit that got the world where it is now is any sort of a solution.

I am so fucking done with being patient. You either know which side you're on by now or you never will.

We've see the results of the West's great wisdom in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Bahrain, LIBYA, Egypt, Ivory Coast etc, etc, every single day. So sick of it.

47. Must have missed it

But why is the town/city of Azawiya so important to G. that he is launching such fierce attacks on it? See from your maps that it to the west of Tripoli, not too far. Just wondering.

50. 1) they're the weakest 2) it is stragetically important
They're weak because they're cut off from the rest of the revolutionaries and are likely to be limited in their ability to defend. It is strategically important because if the revolutionaries can hold it, and meet back up, they have Tripoli surrounded. This makes the final push in the coming weeks all the better, because it can be used as a staging ground.

53. Thanks, sounds logical

Just did a google on the city. Pop. about 102,000. Port city, 10 M docking depth. Has oil facilities and services. Foreign companies based there.

Hoping the conflict does not extend weeks. Too many Libs dying and getting hurt while the West dilly-dallies.

45. Gaddafi forces withdraw but continue to shell city of 100,000 from outside
Conflicting reports coming in from Az Zawiyah - we're hearing just three of Gaddafi's tanks were set on fire - but that troops have now pulled out of the city, and are shelling the city of 100,000 from outside.
